Hello mamacitadahousecat,

It appears you are experiencing an issue with the hard drive on your Mac. We are going to try to help.

We suggest you begin by trying to use macOS Recovery to try to repair the disk. Information on how to do this is available here: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility - Apple Support

If you continue to have an issue, provide the details and perhaps someone will be able to provide further assistance.

Have a good day.

Hey there!

Are you saying that the external HD has the Windows OS installed on it? Or that it is formatted to work with Windows?

Also, just to confirm, are you in recovery mode when in Disk Utility? Or are you logged in as a normal admin?

Likewise, how do you normally use this external HD, for what purpose, and what happens when doing so, that used to work just fine?

Those answers may help, let me know, will help out if I can.
