When will Mac Spell Checkers be Usable

I've been a Mac user since the 90s, but really, can spell checking have got worse?

Of course this sounds nuts, however I know I am not the only one.

So finally I have just got to log this, like all the other people who have complained, hoping against hope to make a small, incremental difference to what I once thought wasn't just a corporation (I know - old school niave etc etc).

So whenever I use Pages or Textedit with the smallest of typos ie: 'wich' when I click on it -

I get the "Look up "wich".

I mean, no Search Engine is going to give me that kind of hassle!

"wich" could be a misspelling of several words.

My immediate thought was 'which', but it could have been 'witch', 'winch', 'rich', 'with' or 'wick', all of which are only one changes letter or one missing letter away from what was typed.

Pages, when set to 'Check spelling while typing,' did flag it as a misspelled word (or, more accurately, did flag it as a 'word' that was not in the spelling dictionary for the language set in Preferences. A right click on the misspelled word did bring up "Lookup wich" at the bottom of a list of of possible intended words:

When set to 'Correct spelling automatically,' the spillchucker replaced "wich" with the first item on that list. Great, if your error was to type a c where you intended to type a t; not too great if your intended word was any of the others on the list, and now had an unflagged, and thus less noticeable wrong word in place of one that was misspelled, but was marked with a red underscore, which is why I leave that option unchecked.

Considering the topic of your post, I was surprised that you had not corrected the spelling error in your parenthetical remark quoted at the beginning of this post, and by your use of i.e. (Latin: id est, English: that is) in place of e.g. (Latin: exempli gratia, English: for example).

Barry

I find a response snuck in prior to my having saved the following reply...

Did the spell-chucker happen to learn "wich" and "niave" in your environment?

The following is from Pages version 10.3.9 (7029.9.8) on Catalina with two languages enabled, and the spell-chucker seems to be working:

And with a firm press on the trackpad on the first typo, a pop-up with the definition of a reasonable guess:

Above with auto-corrupt and auto-cap settings disabled, and with multiple languages enabled, and otherwise operating with defaults.

I've found it occasionally necessary to flush "learned" spellings, if the spell-chucker or auto-corrupt becomes more tolerant of my more consistent or more persistent typos.

But again, log your feedback directly with Apple. They may not or do not see all of what is posted here.

Yes, I'm afraid dear Viking OSX it is indeed rhetorical, I actually wanted to reply to an older post and suddenly and unexpectedly found myself creating a newer one and thought, oh go on, let's do this. I do send feedback (avidly), but sometimes it's just nice to see who else is still experiencing a problem. Thank you for responding.
