I have had the same issue and was able to bypass it by going to settings/Audible. Turn OFF Allow Audible to Access Media & Apple Music. Restart your audible app and now you can turn off you screen and use audible the same way as before the update.

Here is the advice Audible gave me. Hope it will help someone else. Mine is working fine now

➤ Make sure your Audible app is updated and you're using the update version of the app.
➤ Reset iOS
1. Tap on More>Settings (or Home>Profile>Settings)
2. At the bottom of the screen, where the version, application's name and marketplace show, tap and hold on it for 5-10 seconds to activate the hidden functionality. (Note: In order to ensure the function wasn't activated inadvertently, we added a longer than normal delay of 5-10 seconds).
3. You should receive a prompt entitled 'Reset Sign In'. Tap on the 'Sign Out' option.
4. Close the running apps by tapping the menu of your iPhone
5. Restart the device. Once back on, launch the app, sign back in, recheck the content(s) and verify that if the same issue occurs.
➤ Change the settings Background App Refresh and Media & Apple Music
Background App Refresh
1.Tap the Settings app icon on the device
2.Scroll down and tap on the Audible icon
3. If the Background App Refresh permission is ON, turn it OFF and attempt to launch the app
4. Check if the issue persists. If so,
➤ Media & Apple Music

and selected “technical problems” from the pone menu and got this answer from the tech customer service representative.
3.then while in your Audible app under “Allow Audible to Access” make sure to turn OFF the “Media & Apple Music” switch. There should not be any green in the switch when you are done.
This should allow you to listen to audible when you have auto lock on and/or your screen is locked.
Hi Mendogirl, when you reinstall the audible app, does it give you the option to update the app? Updating the app is the key to this being a permanent fix. When I initially reinstalled the app it did not permanently fix the problem, it only worked once I reinstalled and updated the audible app. Hope this helps, good luck.
This from Audible worked:
1. Launch the Audible for iOS app
2. Tap the Profile button at the bottom of the screen.
3. At the bottom of the screen, where the version, applications name and marketplace show, tap and hold on it for 5-10 seconds to activate the hidden functionality. Note: In order to ensure the function wasn't activated inadvertently, we added a longer than normal delay of 5-10 seconds.
4. You should receive a prompt entitled Reset Sign In. Tap on the Sign Out option.
5. From the bottom of the screen to close the app window and you will now be on the main screen of your device.
6. Once on the main screen, swipe up half way from the bottom of the screen to reveal the apps that are currently running on the device
7. Locate the Audible window, and swipe upward on the window to fully exit out of the application. Please do so for all applications running.
8. Next, restart the device by pressing the Up Volume button and the power button simultaneously, then swipe the power icon to the right to power off the device. After a few moments, hold the side power button to turn the phone back on.
9. Once the phone has restarted, launch the Audible application, sign in, and then proceed to use the app as normal.
I updated to iOS15 on my IPhone 11. Had this same problem. To fix it, I went into the Audible app, went into Settings and switched off the Disable auto lock feature. It is working fine now...
I'm having this problem too since updating to IOS 14.5. When going to sleep with the audible app on sleep timer the sound dies as soon as the screen goes to sleep but the app keeps playing. The only work around I have come up with is to force close the app then restart. Then restart the timer and manually close the screen with the right button. This allows the app to continue to play.
This just happened to me. Solved it by changing phone auto-lock mode to “never” in the settings and playing audible for a while. Turned usual auto-lock option back on and have not had issues since.
Under settings icon, tap display and brightness, then tap auto-lock for options and tap never. Play audible book, then return to auto-lock options and choose your preferred option instead of never.
This worked for me on my iPad. Went to settings, then audible and turned off media & Apple Music.
I then quit the audible app and restarted it. Now I can close the cover to my iPad or let the screen lock without the narration going silent! 👍
I was having the same problem. Had to finally go to the Audible player settings and “Disable auto-lock”. This solved the problem but eats up my iPhone battery.
My audible app was doing this periodically. I resolved the issue by uninstalling the audible appt and then reinstalling the app.
Just updated the audible app and it works fine now.
Turning off “low power mode” fixed it for me.
Turning of low power mode fixed this issue for me.
Quick and easy fix for this one with going to settings, then Audible and then disable Media & Apple Music. Did it and restarted the app, worked great. Thank you!
