I'm having this problem too since updating to IOS 14.5. When going to sleep with the audible app on sleep timer the sound dies as soon as the screen goes to sleep but the app keeps playing. The only work around I have come up with is to force close the app then restart. Then restart the timer and manually close the screen with the right button. This allows the app to continue to play.
I have this issue too. It's just Audible, other apps work fine while the phone/app are in this state, and rebooting the phone fixes it for a time but the issue always returns. Incredibly frustrating.
This has been happening on and off with audible on my iPad with plugged in headphones. A couple of things have worked for me when it happens.
Updating the app helped yesterday morning...until I went to bed and the sound stopped again when I turned off my iPad.
The next thing that worked was force closing the app, reopening and pressing play and putting the sleepy timer on as usual. Then I minimized the app before turning off my iPad and that did the trick.
I did and I'm not. Audible works great on my Ipad not on my phone. THis problem is relatively new to me(6 months)
Verizon reset my phone and it worked for about three days.
My Iphone is a one year old SE
Hi everyone - I am the original poster of this topic. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions but as of today none of these solutions have been permanent for me. The app continues to fail me. The original problem is mostly resolved, although intermittently it happens. The app locks up on my iPhone and I have to continually reinstall it. It stops playing downloaded books intermittently when I am not connected to the wifi. Pretty much everything that can go wrong, does. I'm going to get on the phone with Audible again but I am considering cancelling my subscription if this can't be resolved.
Hi Mendogirl, when you reinstall the audible app, does it give you the option to update the app? Updating the app is the key to this being a permanent fix. When I initially reinstalled the app it did not permanently fix the problem, it only worked once I reinstalled and updated the audible app. Hope this helps, good luck.
Thanks Strebby1010. Just got off the the phone with Audible. They now tell me that the app won't work with my iphone6S. Since this started happening when I updated to IOS 14 it appears that they are not going to support the older iphone models. Not sure I trust this but it is time for me to upgrade my phone anyway. So hopefully this solves the problem. I may just find another app altogether!
This from Audible worked:
1. Launch the Audible for iOS app
2. Tap the Profile button at the bottom of the screen.
3. At the bottom of the screen, where the version, applications name and marketplace show, tap and hold on it for 5-10 seconds to activate the hidden functionality. Note: In order to ensure the function wasn't activated inadvertently, we added a longer than normal delay of 5-10 seconds.
4. You should receive a prompt entitled Reset Sign In. Tap on the Sign Out option.
5. From the bottom of the screen to close the app window and you will now be on the main screen of your device.
6. Once on the main screen, swipe up half way from the bottom of the screen to reveal the apps that are currently running on the device
7. Locate the Audible window, and swipe upward on the window to fully exit out of the application. Please do so for all applications running.
8. Next, restart the device by pressing the Up Volume button and the power button simultaneously, then swipe the power icon to the right to power off the device. After a few moments, hold the side power button to turn the phone back on.
9. Once the phone has restarted, launch the Audible application, sign in, and then proceed to use the app as normal.
I went through these steps, hard to say if it worked or not given how intermittent the issue has been though. One point of clarification this step:
"2. Tap the Profile button at the bottom of the screen.
3.At the bottom of the screen, where the version, applications name and marketplace show..."
For me I had to go to Profile then Settings (Gear icon in the top right of profile page) then to the bottom to find the app info to hold on.
I just called Audible and they agree and are aware it is an issue and are working with Apple to fix, with no time specified for resolution of same. Then I saw the post on this board re the solution to re-install the app and check for updates. Sounded like a plan, but I first went into the app settings and found a switch to "Disable auto lock" with the attendant note that Auto Lock will only be disabled while Audible is running but that nonetheless, battery life will be affected. Of course it will, but that seems to me to for sure be at least the short term answer. Only problem there is that if you turn that switch on and are not happy leaving it on, then you either have to remember to turn it off when you've finished with Audible - or check back with the app every 2-3 months or so, and test again with that switch turned off.
My post wasn’t placed where i thought it would be. I followed the directions on page 6 that talked about opening the app, going to the gear and finding where it talked about the version of the app and holding down for about 10 seconds… those directions fixed it for me!!
I'm having this issue as well, EXCEPT that it only occurs when I'm using a lightning to aux adapter with wired headphones. I use bluetooth wireless headphones and it works fine. I've tried force restarting, uninstalling/reinstalling, and turning OFF access to media/music without a solution. What is going on here?
What worked for me:
iOS settings -> Audible ->turned off Background app refresh
Close audible (if open)
Open audible
Close audible
iOS settings -> Audible ->turned on Background app refresh
Open audible, and it now plays even after iphone goes to sleep
I ran into this same issue with my headphones that I purchased. My default is to not allow notifications and that ended up being my problem. Go to Settings->Audible->Notifications and enable "Allow Notifications". You can then disable "Badges" and uncheck alerts but you must leave "Sounds" enabled. I suppose the definition of sound while your phone is locked is some form of "notification". Either way, it solved my issue immediately. Good luck!
This just happened to me today and I have found the fastest and most non-intrusive fix is to go into: Settings -> Audible -> Background Refresh Off; Launch the app and then close it; Then Turn the Background Refresh back on and it works fine.
Running at the moment of this issue iOS 15 Public Beta 7
*Hope This Helps!
