I have had the same issue and was able to bypass it by going to settings/Audible. Turn OFF Allow Audible to Access Media & Apple Music. Restart your audible app and now you can turn off you screen and use audible the same way as before the update.

Hi Mendogirl,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with your Audible app after your update. We'd like to help.

Does this happen in all books in Audible or just a specific one? Have you had a chance to Restart your iPhone since this started? If not, that can be helpful. Then, check out these steps to try to get the app working again: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open

If you continue to have issues after that, reaching out to Audible will be a great next step: How to contact an app developer.

Hope that helps.

Take care!

This is happening to me as well. I purchased new headphones today because I thought my airpods were broken since this happens on multiple devices.

I did just turn off continuous playback and sync across devises in settings.

It is working for now.

I previously tried other suggestions here and they did not work for me but I appreciate anyone who shared.

hope this helps until patch is sent to update.

It seems that there are several temporary solutions to this problem. Last night I phoned Audible. The tech person had me delete my book and then download it again. That worked last night. On a previous call to Audible, another tech person had me turn off, then turn on a couple of settings. That worked for a couple of days. I’ve deleted the app and reinstalled it. That worked for a day. Turning on “never” in auto lock may solve the problem temporarily but then you have to remember to turn it off. Isn’t it Audible’s responsibility to fix this glitch? The techs I have spoken to tell me they’re working on it. We’re all still waiting.
