MacBook Pro 16 inch Flicker/Glitching Screen

My 16 inch MacBook Pro screen flickers whenever I watch videos in full screen (Preview, Quicktime, Netflix, Youtube). When watching, if I move the mouse the flickering stops until stop moving the mouse and the Play/Pause menu disappears.

I have tried resetting the NVRAM, SMC, using safe mode, a test account and reinstalling MacOS. I have also tried turning off auto-brightness and True Tone. I have the latest MacOS 11.2.3

I have found the issue will go away if I turn off Automatic Graphics Switching, but this hurts my battery life, and should not be the only fix. The laptop should work properly without having to sacrifice my battery life.

8 Core 2.4ghz

32GB RAM

2tb SSD

AMD Radeon Pro 5600M

Has anyone had this issue and found a fix? Should I be bringing it to the Genius Bar? I bought AppleCare+ when I bought the laptop in September 2020. Is this a fix that can be done in one day? -- I ask because I am still in school and use this laptop daily.

Thank you all

Hello BloodshotEight0,

It sounds as though your display is flickering when watching videos in any application or website, but the issue doesn't occur when disabling Automatic Graphics Switching. You've tried some great troubleshooting steps thus far, and have done a wonderful job isolating the issue as well. Automatic graphics switching is designed to preserve the battery life when when using graphic intensives tasks such as watching videos in full screen. With the issue not happening when this setting is disabled, it's likely expected. To isolate the issue further though do you notice if it happens when the Mac is connected to a charger?

I disagree with you that watching a video in fullscreen should be considered an intensive task. It can happen even with videos on YouTube at 480p. My old mid-2012 laptop could play videos just fine on its integrated card, and I think this much newer machine should be able to as well.

The issue seems to be better or worse depending on the program (Quicktime=very bad, Netflix=occasional flicker, Online school streaming website=Moderate, etc)

To answer your question, the issue happens with or without being plugged in. Using the second link you provided let's me see that it appears to be using the Integrated card when the flickering occurs.

Thank you for the suggestions,

If you or anyone else has anymore that'd be greatly appreciated

We completely understand your concern BloodshotEight0,

Graphic intensive tasks can include a variety of different graphics material including videos. With the issue you've described, and it occurring while Automatic graphics switching is enabled greatly helps isolate what you're experiencing. This feature is relatively new Mac, and when enabled does cause the Mac to favor battery life over quality of graphic intensive tasks. The next step that would be recommended would be to reach out to Apple. You can find their available contact information via the Get Support website.

Take care!

You can consider lowering your display resolution instead to see if that would provide you with a good battery balance (i.e. allowing to to keep automatic graphics switching on with the higher battery life, but without the screen flickering of higher resolution videos).

Hold down the "Option" get in the Displays System Preferences when you switch from Default, to Scaled, to see more specific resolution options.
