Using 3rd Party Plugin Logic

Hi - I'm trying to use this free 3rd party guitar amp plugin: https://github.com/GuitarML/SmartGuitarAmp

I've allowed the plugin access to run in Security & Privacy, Logic has successfully scanned and validated the plugin, but I can't find it under my audio units to actually use. I have tried dropping the SmartAmp.component file in both ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/ and /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/, no dice either way. I also tried to rescan plugs in Logic following Apple's instructions (removing the audio cache from my library and restarting my MacBook.

Any ideas? It seems like a really cool plugin. My buddy is using Ableton Live on the same model MacBook as I am (Silicon Air) and Ableton is able to run it. The creator of the plugin is able to run it as well on his MacBook in Logic after allowing it in System Preferences and rescanning - but I'm not able to.

Curious....the creator of the plug-in...are you both on the same OS and version of Logic Pro?

Would you know by chance?

Only other thing I can think of is to re-download and re-install just in case it was a bad install:

Be sure to remove all incompatible plugins from the two component folders:

/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/

~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/

Also, be sure to disable failed plug-ins in the Plug-In Manager.

I highly recommend, after you delete plug-ins from the Components folder, to delete your plug-in caches so LOGIC can re-start the scanning process from scratch.

Re-setting the Logic Pro X plug-ins cache manually Print

  1. Close Logic Pro X.
  2. Using macOS Finder go to “~/Library/Caches/AudioUnitCache/” (without the quotes).
  3. Manually delete the com. apple. audiounits. cache file (to force a complete new plug-ins scan).
  4. Re-open Logic Pro X.
  5. Reboot the computer (mandatory).

Keep me posted on your progress,

Eddie G.

I'm waiting back on confirmation from the creator.

I deleted the old components, disabled failed plug-ins, quit logic, restarted the laptop, reinstalled the plugins (both the au and vst3 version this time) opened up Logic, and I was met again with a security prompt. I allowed SmartAmp.component, rescanned it within Logic, it shows as validated again, and I can't find it. To test whether it's a bad install, I downloaded the trial version of Reaper, and was able to open this plugin within Reaper, as an AU and VST3.

After a rescan:

It SHOULD work, and it is validated, it has been the entire time, but within Logic, there is no option for it under audio units:

I can see my other 3rd party amp software (Mercuriall) but not SmartAmp. I've looked in every plugin menu to see if for some strange reason it got nested somewhere it shouldn't, but it it's nowhere to be found.

I have the exact same issue with my M1 Mac Mini running Big Sur: SmartAmp shows up in the Logic Plug-in Manager and is validated, but doesn't show up as an available plug-in. However, SmartAmp shows up in Ableton Live. Have tried rescanning, etc. For what it's worth, it doesn't seem ready for prime time - high CPU use and odd distortion when you move the tone settings from default. But I like the concept!
