M1 MacBook Pro No Longer Showing USB audio and video devices

So for Apple Support hasn't been able to help. Actually, my MacBook was bricked for a couple of days.


Here is the problem:

My Plantronic .Audio 655 DSP headset and Logitech Webcam was working until last week. The week before I had installed 11.2.3. When I went to do a voice-over recording, the headset no longer showed in the Audio option in any of my software.


Next, I notice the Logitech wasn't appearing either. So I grabbed my BLUE Snowball to try and it too would not show up. All devices worked fine on my iMac, so I know they work. And the StarTech Adapter and USB hub work as well with my hard drives.


Does anyone else have the same problem? Is there a solution?

Hey there David,


We'd like to help get your three accessories working correctly with your Mac.


You mentioned that other accessories(USB hub, StarTech Adapter, and external hard drives) work without any issues when using the same connection.


Let's continue ruling out some other possible causes:

  1. As the three accessories you mentioned having the issue are all third-party, have you already contacted the manufacturers to check if there are any updates for your devices? One in particular to ask them would be compatible drivers for macOS 11.2.3.
  2. Has a restart of your Mac been tried since this began to occur? If not, check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
  3. Another thing to check would be if you're able to use all three of those accessories with another computer.

Great to hear replacing the USB hub worked for you!


We don't have an answer to your question regarding why your first USB hub would stop working, but like any machine, it may require service.


As you've already narrowed it down to the older USB hub based on the details confirmed, we recommend reaching out to the AUKEY manufacturers to see if they have any steps for you to try.

Hi,


I worked with three or four different specialist on the problem. We turned theMac off, reset the NVRAM, added another admin user, and after that I was told to reinstall Big Sur. And that not only failed to solve the problem, but lack of disk space required me to wipe the system. That lead to two days of bricked MacBook.


Likely, I did get a great specialist who was familiar with the M1. She got me back up and running with a new Big Sur OS. However, the problem still exists.


So I remember that I purchased a USB-A to USB-C converter. I wanted to see if the problem was actually something else. Sure enough, the Plantronics headset appeared in the Sound Control. This leads me to believe that the system upgrade has an incompatibility issue with the USB Hub. While hard disks and SSDs continued to work fine, any audio/video device won't.


I have a new USB Hub on order. My old hub is an AUKEY. The new one is a TP-Link. I am really hoping thats solves my issue, I'd like to get back to functionality on the M1.


Is there a list of USB Hubs that are listed on a compatibility chart?

So here's where my system stands:


My original problem started with my past configuration...StarTech USB-C 5 port hub connected to the MacBook Pro. The AUKEY USB 3.0 Hub was connected to the StarTech. The Plantronics Headset was connect to the AUKEY Hub (powered). No problem until 11.2.3., when all USB audio/video device stopped appearing. Even connecting the Headset to the StarTech failed to help.


After the major reload of Big Sur and reload of software...the problem continued. I happened to have a UBS 3.0 to USB-C adapter lying around, so I tried connected the Headset directly to the MacBook Pro. The Headset appeared in the Sound Options. This lead me to believe the AUKEY Hub was bad.


I just received a TP-Link USB 3.0 hub (powered) and proceed to test. Using the first configuration of hub-to-hub failed. Still not showing. Next, I used the USB-C adapter to connect the TP-Link to the MacBook Pro...and it did work. So now I have my audio devices back.


I am not sure if I should closes this and mark it solved. The new configuration works, but it doesn't answer the main question: Why would the first configuration all of a sudden stop work? Is it related to a power issue related to 11.2.3? Is it something Apple might want to document to help their support team? Something third-party hardware vendors need to know?
