I am having a lot of trouble understanding this process. My iPad and IOS devices are not showing up in my finder sidebar and I'm not able to add them. Also files on my iPad are grayed out so I can't open them.

I cannot imagine what this means, as a file is the basic building block of what’s shown in Finder. That’s like saying “There is an atom with other atoms in it”, which is, of course, impossible.

Thanks I had been looking all over and couldn't find what you sent me. I have one more question on my iPad on the iCloud drive I have a file and it opens to a series of other files with items in them. The items are all grayed out and I cannot open them. I know I have done something wrong but I don't know how to open them. Can you help?
