facetime camera stopped working

I went through all of the steps that support.apple.com gave me, including resetting the SMC, but it still doesn't work. I had a meeting that ended at 5, no problem. Tried again at 8 and 'no camera installed'

Hey there wandadiane,

Sounds like you’re having an intermittent issue on your Mac where you’re seeing an error stating ‘No camera installed’. You’ve been working with Apple Support to troubleshoot but the situation is persisting.

Resetting the SMC is a great step! Thanks for doing that. Next, let’s have you be sure to disconnect any peripherals you have connected. Please create a test admin user and check to see if the same thing is happening there. You’ll find an article below with steps on how to do that. Then also, boot to safe mode and log in to your user and test there as well. There is also a link below on using safe mode.

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Start up your Mac in safe mode

Let us know the results or if you have any questions about either step.

wandadiane,

We sure do appreciate all the troubleshooting you've done. Continuing this issue with an in person appointment is a valid way to proceed.

If you'd like to continue troubleshooting before that, one thing we'd want to know is whether you were still seeing this error message in the new admin user you created. We ask that as the results tell us if the issue is isolated to one user account or if it is happening system-wide on your Mac. That differentiation tells us how to proceed.

Additionally, you can use your case number and reach back out to Apple Support to work through the next steps as well.

Here are some things to keep in mind, get ready and take with you before your visit: Get your Mac ready for service

Thanks.
