I want to factory reset my Ipad but it keeps requesting the apple ID which I forgot and cannot retrieve cause the email linked to the account no longer exists

You can reset it without the Apple ID, but it will then end up being activation locked instead.
You might not be able to resolve the activation lock

You will need to recover the password:

This is an old ipad i am giving to my nephew but i hav forgot the password. there is a lot of stuff i do not want to leav on the ipad so i thought a factory reset would be the best way to let him start fresh,
