So I have an iPhone XR, I’ve had it for a good two years at this point and it hasn’t shown any problems until now. A few weeks ago my phone started dying at 20%, and would come back at 12% every time. The percentage at which it would die has been increasing since then and now dies at around 42%. I don’t know whether this is a software problem or a battery problem, please help!

You likely need to a new battery. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health
What is it? If it's in the low 80% or lower range, it's time for a new battery.
Only have the battery replaced by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to ensure you are getting an authentic Apple Battery. Aftermarket service kiosks, etc., can not buy original Apple parts.

To extend battery life it is recommended to no go below 20%. Given the issues you are having I would suggest you click on the Get Support link at the top right of this page to start the service process and get your iPhone battery tested.
I echo QuickTimeKirks recommendation to not let the battery go below 30%. The best option is to put your phone on its charger when you go to bed and take it off in the morning when you get up and go about your day.
Never let the battery get below 30% charge.
thank you for the advice! Unfortunately it says the battery maximum capacity is 93% so I really don’t know what else to do
