Files app does not function on cellular data

the Files app is great …when it works.

I cannot access (iCloud-stored) files over cellular— the will not download. They act like they are downloading but they never arrive.

Files’ cellular data is set to On in Cellular Data settings pane.

(But I can see it’s not working because the total usage is only 0.7Kb. I’ve tried (but with no success) to download Megabytes of files.)

I have this issue on both my iPhone and iPad. Both devices are iOS up to date.

Hello stephen.ph,

It sounds like you're not able to access or download files in the Files app when connected to cellular data, correct? We want to help any way we can.

"If you want to upload, download, or share files using cellular data, open Settings, select Cellular, scroll down to iCloud Drive and any third-party cloud services you use, and turn it on for each service."

You can find more information under the "If you need help" part of the following page: Use the Files app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thanks!

stephen.ph,

We appreciate all the troubleshooting and work you've put toward this issue so far.

Just to confirm, you're not receiving any error messages when trying to download files over cellular data, correct? If you are currently receiving an error, please let us know what the error says, as that can help us determine the best way to proceed.

Also, it sounds like your devices are running an older version of iOS, as the current version is 14.4.2. You may want to try backing up and updating iOS using the steps found here: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Take care.

stephen.ph,

Thanks for following up with us. To help us get a better understanding of the issue, we’d like to ask a few questions.

  1. Does the issue only happen with the Files app? In other words, are you able to access other apps and features that require an internet connection, while connected to cellular data?
  2. When did this issue first begin? Were any changes made to your devices or settings before this began?
  3. If you restart your devices, does that correct the issue temporarily, or is there no change at all?
  4. You mentioned that both devices are updated; just to confirm, are they both running iOS 14.4.2 at this time? Find the software version on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

Thank you.

  1. Only Files app is misbehaving. All other apps have with Cellular Date On are working fine.
  2. The issue is happening on both my iPhone and iPad (yes, it’s a cellular iPad.) I noticed this issue a few weeks ago. The only change I made was swapping the SIM in my phone. (I switched countries and put the local SIM in my primary phone.)

Note: I just checked my secondary iPhone; Files also does not function over cellular on that phone.

3. Restarting does not solve the issue in any way.

#4 all three devices are running iOS 14.4

Deleting/reinstalling Files app does nothing to solve this issue.

Erase and restore the device solved one device but not a second.

The third and fourth devices were solved by logging out of iCloud and logging back in.

I gave up on the second device. It’s odd that erasing the device didn’t solve the problem because erasing a phone includes the process of logging out/in iCloud.
