I can’t tell if I’m being scammed or actually blackmailed.

So last night, I got a rather alarming email. I was informed that my webcam was infiltrated and captured me doing some personal things. They also informed me that through RDP log they accessed my email contacts and would share the video to all my contacts if I didn’t comply to paying them 1500 through crypto within 48 hours. Basically everyone’s worst nightmare come to life.

I did some investigating but I can’t figure out if this is fake or not. My questions are below and any insight from someone who has a deeper knowledge of computers and hacking would be greatly appreciated.

1. Is rdp log possible if I’ve never used it, downloaded it, and all my sharing options in system preferences are off?
  2. Can a hacker turn sharing preferences off after he’s done hacking?
  3. Can a hacker clear their activity logs/history of their entry to my system? I checked through terminal and didn’t see any unusual history.

Essentially I’ve checked every way I know how to see if someone has entered my system through how they’ve described and it doesn’t seem like they have. Not to mention, their English was broken, they contacted me through an old email I don’t frequently use, and they gave contradicting instructions regarding how long I had to comply.

I really just need to know if I’m going to have to have a very embarrassing talk with friends/family/colleagues. Any advice would really help. Thanks In advance.
