mail often swaps subject heading for messages

I've been having a recurring problem with Apple's Mail app on my iMac running Catalina. I have many mailboxes and many rules set up to distribute messages into the mailboxes. This is all working, but mail often swaps the subject headings and message content of at least two messages in various mailboxes. It doesn't happen ALL the time, but it happens often enough that it's a real nuisance and it makes me concerned I will delete message I want to keep. I know that rebuilding the mailbox in question "solves" the problem, but it takes time and I really don't like continually rebuilding my mailboxes just because I checked my mail. Is there any way to make Mail *stop* having this strange habit? I never had this problem until I upgraded to Catalina. Is this a bug in Catalina?

Hello Paul SanGregory,

Thanks for reaching out to us in Apple Support Communities about issues you’re having in Mail on your Mac. We're happy to help by looking into this more!

If you haven't already, make sure you have the latest version of macOS installed on your Mac, this article can help:

Keep your Mac up to date

If you still have issues, we'd like to further isolate potential causes for this behavior. See if this continues to be an issue when you restart your Mac in safe mode:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

If you're able to use Mail as expected, the next step would be to rule out incompatible login items:

Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac

Also, testing in another user account can help determine if this may be user or account related settings causing this issue. Here's how you can create a new user for testing:

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Keep us posted with the results.

Best Regards.

Paul SanGregory,

Thanks for the additional information. Your answers really do help us to isolate the issue. The next time you notice this issue, let's have you go to iCloud.com in Safari and log into your account. Then under Mail, check and see if the same issue appears in your iCloud email at iCloud.com as it doesn't in Mail on your Mac. This will help us isolate the issue to either the Mail app or your iCloud account.

Let us know how that goes.

Have a great day.

The problem just recurred again in one of my mailboxes. It seems to have involved 2 different messages swapping subject headings (if there are other similar problems in other mailboxes I haven't noticed it yet).

So I went to iCloud Mail (using Firefox) and the problem didn't exist there. The message headings appear in the same order in my mailbox, but the two messages had swapped their content. The rule I use to put those messages into this mailbox selects messages that are sent to a specific e-mail address of mine (actually an e-mail alias that I had set up on Mac.com a million years ago). I don't know if that causes problems in Mail or not, but most of the messages in that mailbox did have the correct subject headings. Just those two (as far as I noticed) were swapped.

On my iPhone the messages have the correct subject headings and content. On my Macbook Air the messages are also correctly attached to their subject headings.

Thanks for your reply, MoonJ.

I have kept my computer up to date as far as Catalina goes, but because of software compatibility issues, I don't want to upgrade to Big Sur until I'm certain it won't render any of my software obsolete.

While the problem is recurring, it is also intermittent enough that I don't want to run my computer in safe mode all the time just to see if it ever happens again. I'm concerned safe mode would interfere with my daily work habits and routines.

I suspect this is not a login item issue because I have (on occasion) seen it happen on my Macbook air, too. That would seem to mean that it's not related to a user account on my iMac as well. (I read mail on my Macbook much less often than I do on my iMac so I'm not sure if the problem is as common there or not)

I have read other threads from years past in which people had this same issue, though I didn't see where anybody said it is an intermittently recurring issue. I'm wondering if maybe Mail sometimes gets confused because I'm collecting messages from four different servers and using rules to distribute it all into many different mailboxes in my iCloud account? Or is something wrong with my iCloud account? (I used to put all my mailboxes "On My Mac", but started putting them in iCloud after I got a new iMac a few months ago. I only started having this problem after I did that.)
