Quicktime not able to sync audio when playing h.264 exported from adobe

Hi! I'm curious if anyone else is having this issue. When I export an h.264 video from adobe premiere or adobe media encoder QuickTime has a hard time keeping the audio in sync. It will start in sync but any time I scrub the video the audio goes way out of sync. When I play the same video in other players like chrome or adobe bridge it plays back just fine BUT if I export the video in other NLEs like divinci resolve or iMovie, QuickTime seems to be okay with those. Where is the issue and how do I fix it? Is it with adobe or apple or are they just not playing well together? Thanks!

Hi all,

I was having the same problem with taking an older QT or h264 mp4 video file, converting it to a smaller H264 mp4 video file using Media Encoder 2021 on my iMac and then getting a mp4 file that was out of sync when playing on Quicktime Player. I looked up a few things and did these things:

  • cleared Media Cache in Encoder
  • did a VBR 2-pass under the instead of the default 1-pass user the Video tab Bitrate settings

Then the video that it output played in sync on Quicktime Player. I have a 2020 27 inch iMac running Catalina OS. Hope that helps someone out there...

I am also having this issue and have only started experiencing it in the last couple of months. I've been exporting out my videos from Adobe Premiere using the same codec for the last 5+ years and have never had any issues with playback in Quicktime until very recently. Can you please provide an update or solution for this? I shouldn't have to use VLC or Handbrake to view an H.264 file because Quicktime can't handle scrubbing.

Unacceptable is right. I've just spent 9 hours troubleshooting my export settings, correcting my VFR source footage, banging my head on the wall to no avail to try to get Quicktime to play my Premiere exports of a project I'm working on under deadline. If I hadn't clicked on this thread I'd still be at it. Thanks to you all for your helpful notes about an unhelpful situation.

I’m having the same issue as everyone else here. Premier exported H.264 loses sync in QuickTime if I do any scrubbing or even just jump to a different point in the video.

I wanted to add though that I also have the same problem if I try to play the files on my Apple TV device. If I do anything other than press play audio falls apart.

Apple, QuickTime needs help. Please fix this!

I am still having this same issue.

I work at a production company and we export all of our dailies as H264 files. Whenever I export them to our server or external devices it has the sync issue but not when I export to the desktop. Another thing I have noticed is that my older h264 exports still play fine in QuickTime it just seems to be anything exported after April time.

Any news on whether they are going to fix this anytime soon or should I just become a full time VLC viewer?

I keep going back to this thread every few months and nothing changes. I don't have QT 10.4 My clients don't. It's embarrassing to send jobs and have the client say "THE WHOLE THING IS OUT OF SYNC!" Why does it take so long to fix? I can't tell clients to use the Finder or VLC. It just confuses them. QuickTime is the default for video. This is the simplest thing that is ruining my business. They won't fix Image Capture either. Apple. PLEASE PLEASE FIX ASAP. I'm absolutely stuck.

I tried outputting with Constant Bit Rate as suggested. It worked once, but not since. It's got to be Quicktime no? They just don't have the love. Everything plays fine in VLC. If VLC was the default player in Mac's, it would be fine. But it's not. I just want to know what it will take to fix this. Is it QT 11??? Or a Mac OS update?? Or do I have to export in Pro Res and triple my file size?? WHO will fix it. WHAT will it take. WHEN will it happen. WHY is it not solved. It continues to hurt me and my business. I'm a sad editor.

Hi Manaya,

I have tried your suggestions changing to Constant Bit Rate. Everything stays in sync fine with small files (20mb), but we are still receiving the same issue with large file (1gb in size) so when I scrub I can see the desync of the audio. Using Handbrake does fix the issue, but using just Adobe Premiere would be ideal. Is there a pro preset that you can share the will work with large files?

Any suggestion?

@monaya and all -

Tried the CBR export setting on a 35 minute clip and no luck. Still having sync issues that show up within a minute or two of the start of the clip. Scrubbing to the end did not resolve either. The raw footage was entirely shot at 23.976 fps on three Lumix GH5 cameras so I don't think variability in the source footage is an issue.

Apple is clearly occupied elsewhere, probably focused on buying bigger wheelbarrows to move all the money we've given them.

I have had this issue for a while. It seems that Apple is more than ok with third party video players having better playback than their own proprietary software. This is the first instance of this in the 30+ years I have been a Macintosh/Apple user. Maybe a sign of the times. The playback seems to work only if the file is on the native device. Considering I have purchased the latest MacBook Pro and am having these issues, I see it as a harbinger for more inconsistencies. I hope there is a fix soon. There have been many updates since this problem started and none have fixed the issue. Apple team, What say you? Or will we get more silence on this issue.
