M1 Macbook Air and external CD Drive

Anyone know why an aftermarket external CD drive won't work on a new M1 Macbook Air? I'm connecting using the 4" Apple USB-A to USB-C dongle and it's as though the drive isn't getting enough power.

M1 MacBook usb power There seems to be an issue with the M1 macs with regard to the power output at the USB ports. I tried using my dvd drive on my M1 Max MacBook Pro (Monterey 12.3.1). The drive will not work; the disc will not spin in the drive, the drive just clicks. I’m using an Apple usb to usb-c adapter and I tried all 3 USB ports. I tested the drive on two PCs that I have and it works with both of those computers. My wife and daughter both have an M1 MacBook Air and I tried the drive on both USB ports on both computers and the drive did not work. So, the issue isn’t with the dvd drive or the cable / adapter. The problem seems to be the power output at the USB port on the M1 Macs. Anyone else experience this issue? I thought of getting a usb-c to hdmi adapter and trying to run my dvd drive through the hdmi port, but when you drop $3500 on a computer you don’t want a work-around you want a solution.

External CD/DVD Writer Not Powered By MacBook Air 2022? I just bought a new MacBook Air 2022. When I connect my LG/Hitachi Slim external CD/DVD reader/writer via USB-C (using an Apple dongle adaptor) the unit doesn't seem to get enough power. System information sees the drive but it makes a clicking noise about once a second, the power light doesn't come on, and I can't open the tray. The same combination works fine on my 2018 MBP so I'm confused. Isn't USB-C supposed to have standard set of specs for power? If the Air doesn't supply enough power, how do I find a drive that will work? I still need to read music CDs.

MacBook Pro M1 Max does not recognize CD SuperDrive. Needs external power My wife & I are on vacation and we have 2 macBook Pro laptops. Mine is a M1 Max. Right now my computer is up to date with the latest Ventura 13.1 operating system. When plugging in our cd superdrive to a USB-A port on a hub, we get error message "USB Accessory Needs Power" The notice continues "Connect 'Apple USB ...' to a USB port on this Mac". Of course, there is no USB-A port on this machine. I have stripped other external devices that could draw power from the unpowered USB3.0 hub #1 with no change in performance. I do have a powered USB2.0 7-port hub #2 with me but with the dongles that I have, I have to daisy-chain off hub #1 with the same results. Not quite sure what limits our ability to run the CD SuperDrive. Cannot even load cd into drive. there is a "spring" resistance to efforts to manually load the cd. The only other thought process might include the fact that the SuperDrive has been stored in the Bahamas exposed to summer heat and the drive is "toast". My ScanSnap scanner survived the heat without an issue. I have rebooted both computers to no avail. Still get the same message. I see that others have reported the same symptoms so I am not alone on this issue.

What drive are you using? I have Apple and Samsung drives that work fine with the USB-A to USB-C adapter. Perhaps your drive requires additional power. Be sure it is connected directly to your Mac and not through a hub.
