iPhone 12 Pro Max Camera Lenses

Just trying to get my head around which lens is which on the Pro Max. Top Left (looking at rear of phone) is called "Wide" but almost no setting I select will activate that particular lens. If I shift my phone into Portrait mode, that lens kicks in, but other than that, it doesn't get used. Middle Right is called "Ultra Wide," and sure enough any photo with a zoom of less than 1x shifts to this lens (and it does a great job.) Bottom left is called "Telephoto" but it seems to be the workhorse lens, taking every photo with a zoom of 1x or more.

Is this accurate? Or is my phone not working right? Why would the "wide" lens never get used, even for wide angle shots? Everything < 1x goes automatically to "Ultra Wide" lens.
