I would appreciate a recommendation on a mid-level photo/ slide scanner that is very compatible with 2019 iMac Big Sur for personal use.

I personally have a higher-end Epson scanner I use with the macOS Image Capture app. The Epson scanner has served me well. You can see what they offer here: Photo Scanners for Home - Epson. If you purchase one, don't download the Epson software, rather just download from Epson Support the Image Capture driver.
Cheers,
Jack

There are many options for photo/slide scanners out there depending on your budget, the true optical resolution of the scanner, whether the vendor continues to support the product and favorable product reviews. Some of these scanners may provide an ICA driver makes it available to Apple's Image Capture software.
I suggest that for any photo/image scanner that you consider, that you also check that it is supported by the paid, VueScan Professional without any original vendor software or drivers necessary. This gives you vendor independence when they eventually do phase out driver support for their product.
In 2010, I had a Canon flatbed scanner that they had abandoned support, and I purchased VueScan Professional to use it with my Mac. Eleven years later, I have never paid any subscription, or upgrade fee to the VueScan vendor, and that ancient scanner still works just fine with my M1 mini and macOS 11.2.3. I receive nothing from the VueScan vendor for mentioning their product here.
I have a Canon Pixma TS6120 that I use for printing.
