Ipod sync problem - iMatch problem

I'm losing my mind. I have a gen 3 iPod running 5.1.1 OS. I didn't use it for some time, but have recently revived it. I have uploaded a thousand songs from the good old days and they play fine. iTunes will not sync my iPod. It lists the device and it's content, but won't sync so I can't get any of my new music onto my iPod. The sync function is grayed out, although it offers the option of uploading my iPod content to my PC, just the opposite of what I need. I ran a diagnostic it passed all connectivity tests, ironically including "sync" functions. The only error said "iPod Support Service is not installed"... of course no info on what to do about that.

From my iPod screen in iTunes, selected Music and at the bottom of the screen there was an active sync button! I bravely clicked it and now some time later it's happily spinning "Syncing...step 3 of 3, waiting for changes to be applied".... I'm not hopeful, as the sync buttons on the main window remain gray. It just flashed something about "genius not being ...something... be cause the connection was reset"... I don't even use Genius, because obviously the programers at Apple aren't actually Geniuses . The sync window now is just sitting there ...waiting.... but nothing is spinning so I think we're pretty much done. I'm beginning to think this an Apple plot to get me to give up on my beloved tiny iPod and buy the new huge one which sucks. Even Apple says my iPod is compatible with iMatch and should be happily syncing with my PC . Can anyone offer any ideas? I just bought new music to listen to on my 6 hour drive tomorrow...but it's sitting alone on my desktop and I can't access it on my iPhone or iPod.

Android is starting to look very appealing. I never had problems with Android!

In a desperate attempt at a work around, I subscribed to iMatch! Problem solved, right? Nope. They took my $25 bucks, my account says I have an active subscription, but nothing changed in ITunes and every time I try to do any thing to get it to show up it cheerfully tells me I should "subscribe, since I'm not subscribed.

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - Apple Community if you have content on the device that isn't in your library.

Not sure why iTunes doesn't want to sync content to your device. Perhaps a rebuild of iTunes would help with that issue and/or you issue with iTunes Match.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment. Links to the most recent builds are now at the bottom of the page.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

See Turn on Sync Library (AKA iCloud Music Library) with Apple Music - Apple Support. The process should be the same for iTunes Match. You need to be signed into your Apple ID and you computer must be authorized for it as well. If your subscription is active you should get the option in preferences to enable iCloud Music Library.
