Recover Overwritten Folder: ECAMM Skype Call Recorder

Hi there,

I use ECAMM's Skype Call Recorder to record all of my Skype calls so I can transcribe them, but for some reason, the program has overwritten my entire saved calls folder with my latest call. The software starts recording as soon as you connect on a Skype call, and automatically saves the audio file into a folder called 'Saved Calls' into 'Movies'

I have two very valuable calls in there that I'm trying to recover, but am stuck for a solution as I cannot use Time Machine or The Cloud to recover them.

Is there any solution to this? I have contacted ECAMM directly.

It is highly unlikely you can recover that data especially if you are using an SSD. Even if you are using a hard drive the data can become overwritten because you are continuing to use the computer. At best you would need to boot from an external macOS drive and use a data recovery app such as Data Rescue to attempt to locate the file(s). Good luck as that may involve sifting through tens of thousands of un-named files.

You may want to be a bit more aggressive on your backups or make sure to move the file to another location immediately after the call/recording so that the app won't overwrite the file.

Thanks for this. I actually managed to recover some of the calls that I'd converted into MP3s (the call recorder software automatically saves the recordings into a weird movie format called Ecamm something) but the ones I needed and hadn't converted yet I couldn't find so I think they're gone.

100% agree with you – definitely need to take more care backing up files. I've duplicated all of my other calls and moved them to a separate location just in case.
