Can you share AirTags with family members?

Can two accounts track the same airtag? Can me and my wife track the same airtag if we are in the same family account?

If it were possible to share an AirTag, then it would be impossible to stop coercion. Someone in a domestic abuse situation could be made to share access to their AirTag and Apple has therefore prevented this.

Regrettably, the answer to everyone with a good reason to share an AirTag is the same solution that will work for anyone with a bad reason. Buy two AirTags.

True, it's more money, and you can imagine Apple is both glad about that and also figuring that the extra cash is an extra barrier to abusers. But the people arguing that you cannot share an AirTag also seem to unthinkingly assume you can't put two AirTags on an item." Source:

Very poor planning. Privacy concerns only arise if you don’t give someone permission to track the device. My husband had the kids for a day & I had to transfer the tracking device to him so he could find them in a crowded area. The very next day, I had them & had to remove the tags from his phone and add them to mine. This was done improperly because we didn’t realize the first phone and tag had to be each other when the tags were removed. Because of this oversight, I had no way to track the kids when we went to the beach and I got continuous alerts that I had my husband’s tag with me & he was able to track me… like he usually does with FindMyIPhone. Makes no sense at all and we spent most of the day trying to figure out how to fix it. It’s insane that two parents can’t track a child at the same time.

This is a major pain, IMO. If I want to lend my car to my daughter to run to the store . . . I don't want to have to remember to disable the safety alerts. I want to be able to check and see if she is truly going to the store or to her boyfriend's house. As long as I can see where my AirTag is located, I am perfectly capable of deciding whether or not it is a problem.

I am finding this discussion interesting. Since I have never found a place to give Apple feedback on their products and what they do or don't do, I hope this can be one of those conveyances. So many times I see an advertisement that says, "We listened to you, the users." I'm always thinking when? where? I want to give input too! I really hope Apple rethinks the way people want to use this product and makes it more user friendly! Already, it is so much better than "Tiles" that has very limited use. Please Apple, fix this.

The whole change to the notification between eight and 24 hours separation was done specifically at the request of people afraid of Stalkers. I’m not taking any sides in the issue. Tile has no current capability to warn people of Stalkers. To the best of my knowledge this is the first attempt of several companies to provide a partial solution. It screws up a lot of normal people in the process. I will continue to use tile for things that I lose regularly I will use the Apple device for theft. The find my phone should work for other family member tracking

I really don't know about and haven't had a reason to use my AirTags for being warned about Stalkers . . . not sure how that could happen? I want family members to be able to share access to my AirTags. I bought one specifically to put on a tiny Chuhuaha that doesn't bark when you call her name. She runs off into the woods behind the house when she can slip away. She thinks it's a game. These woods are full of domestic garbage bags because we get a nightly black bear visiting the neighborhood and dragging his prey back up into the woods to devour. She would be a popcorn snack for this black bear. When she disappears, all 4 of us Apple iPhone users need to look for her. I totally get and sympathize with the problem people are having with using the same car keys in the household. Not my problem. I live in a small town in Alaska.

New complaint… I apparently can’t be out with my husband while we both have our keys now, because I get alerts that whole time saying he’s following me! We dared to take a drive together yesterday & was continuously being updated with alerts and maps because my husband was following me… while sitting next to me in the car…🤦‍♀️ Nothing like. A leisurely night out…

That’s all most of us want… family sharing. It’s ridiculous that my husband & I can’t both find our lost daughter simultaneously, or that we can’t go out together without getting continuous alerts that we’re being followed by the other! We tried to have a nice evening out & both got continuous alerts and maps that we were being tracked by the other. Enough already!! I kind of regret buying the airtags, as we can’t use them for the main reasons that we bought them (to find our kids while we’re out & to find lost pets) & they’re a nuisance the rest of the time.

After reading the posts here, I've decided not to buy Air Tags, until Apple fixes family sharing. Our family of four, shares four cars interchangeably and using Air Tags would be nightmarish. All of us can see each other (iPhone) in Find My app, but not the Air Tags. A family should be able to share Air Tags and the only time the alerts should show, is when the Air Tag is not at home and away from the family iPhones.
