Touch ID on Macbook Air M1 not working

Macbook Air M1 2020, OS 11.2.3. Setting up a finger, usually right index, as the fingerprint, accepts ok and says can use, but 9 times out of ten it will work once the next time I need it, after that I get the shaking and need to put in the 4 character password for the Macbook. I have reset this more than a dozen times, trying different fingers, no success. I called AppleCare as I have warranty - just bought this MBA 3 weeks ago. Tech said to reinstall the OS! I told him no. I have done that previously on other Macs I have for other problems and it is a tedious process that I try to avoid, although I realize it may be necessary for some instances; I have lost data and third-party programs, even though I regularly maintain a Time Machine backup. I told the tech I did not think I should need to do a reinstall for this problem, since my print is recognized some of the time. Also, I'm aware of a possible problem with oil or a substance on the finger or the key.

If anyone has a suggestion, it will be appreciated.

Thanks.

MacBook Air (2020 or later)

Sometimes, one needs to press the finger more firmly on the Touch ID Sensor for it to register. If that does not so success - shutdown the normal way - keep the lid open and disconnect any External Drives. Press the Power / Touch ID button ( same button and Hold the button down for 10 seconds and release. Restart - log in - and Test the Touch ID.
