unlock on iphone

I want to give my Iphone 6 to my son, we bought a SIM card from Bell but my provider use to be Rogers so the SIM card isn't working. It's telling me to call my provider to have them unlock my phone in order to use the SIM card. What are the steps to unlock an old phone?
