Magic mouse 2 right click intermittantly produces left click

I have been having an issue with my right click on a Magic Mouse 2 paired with my new MacBook Air running Big Sur 11.2.3. Intermittently, like every 20th click, the right click registers as a left click. I went through numerous sites looking for a solution and came to the conclusion it was the hardware so I ended up purchasing a brand new Magic Mouse 2. No change. Still the same exact issue.

I'm not sure what to do here, please help, your my only hope!

adh77, thank you for your input here. I am certain I have been clicking on the right hand side of my mouse so I don't believe that is the issue. Now, you brought up that the mouse is touch sensitive.

I wonder if what is happening is that my index finger is touching the mouse when I use my middle finger to "secondary click." I just tested and sure enough, if index finger is touching and I right click it actually registers as a left click...

I will consciously keep my index finger off when I right click and see if that makes the difference.

Thanks!

Hi itsjeremy,

Thank you for raising your Magic Mouse 2 query on Apple Support Communities. From reading your description, it seems that your mouse occasionally registers a left-click when you right-click.

Just to clarify some terminology here before continuing. A left-click is the "primary click", as in selecting items on screen. A right-click is the "secondary click", for invoking the context menu (copy/paste, lookup, spelling suggestions, etc.).

The Magic Mouse 2 determines whether a click is right or left purely based on the location it detects on it touch-sensitive surface. This is different to other mice which have two separate hardware buttons inside: one for left, one for right. Since you have replaced your first Magic Mouse 2, then a physical defect is unlikely the cause of this behaviour. Out of interest, when you are right-clicking, do you always ensure your finger is as far right on the mouse as possible? It could be the case that when the mouse registers a left-click incorrectly, it may because your finger was just left of the centre of the mouse.

As an experiment to rule this out, for the next couple of days, try to consciously keep your finger as far right as possible when right-clicking. If the intermittent left-clicks stop appearing, then we can say your finger was simply not far enough to the right of the mouse surface when right-clicking.

See how this goes for you. If you need me to clarify anything or you believe I have misunderstood your query just drop a message here.

Kind regards,

Hi itsjeremy,

Thanks for taking my advice into consideration. You are most correct in saying that your index finger could have been triggering a left-click on the mouse. I am curious to hear if keeping your index finger off the mouse works as expected.

Feel free to reply to this thread if anything you would like to discuss comes to mind.

Hi JackHiker,

Thank you for sharing this issue on the Support Communities. Just to understand your question, you are interested to know why right-clicking with your Magic Mouse is causing Safari to freeze with Big Sur on your iMac.

I believe this issue relates to Safari itself rather than the Magic Mouse as the mouse works fine with Firefox. Also, I notice that your track pad, which I assume is the Magic Trackpad, causes Safari to freeze on a right-click.

Could you confirm if you have any Extensions installed in Safari? You can check this by navigating as follows:

Safari > Preferences > Extensions

See this link for more information: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203051

If you have any extensions installed, try disabling all of them. This can be done by unchecking the box beside their name. Then close and re-open Safari and try right-clicking as before:

  • If the right-click functionality works correctly, one of your extensions do not support the version of Safari on Big Sur. Try enabling each extension one by one, restarting Safari, and try to right-click. As soon as Safari starts freezing, then you have found the problematic extension.
  • If the right-click functionality still does not work after disabling all extensions, then Safari may have a problem. I would suggest raising the issue on this Community: Mac OS & System Software

Please do share your experiences with the advice above. If you need any clarification just drop a message here.

I have the same sort of issue after the new update to Big Sur 11.3. When I right click with my Magic Mouse it now freezes Safari. It's ONLY Safari, all other apps re ok, ever Firefox is ok. Only Safari freezes. I must use right click a million times a day to open new tabs on my iMac. But now it's broken, and right after the update.

I'm not going to update my Laptop, not until this if fixed.

Not one thing has changed, all I did was the update. I even turned off my mouse and tried the trackpad, Safari behaves the same way with the track pad. Please fix Safari.

Hi JackHiker,

Great to hear your feedback and that Safari is working normally now.

I hope Safari doesn't freeze when right-clicking in future. If it does I would, as you have rightly done restart the computer. There is a good bit of background work that happens on right-click to load the context menu so macOS could have misbehaved at this step causing Safari to freeze.

Feel free to reach out the Support Communities again if you have any questions or concerns with your Apple devices.

Enjoy Big Sur and kind regards,
