What if you are using later OS's then Mojave? Currently using Big Sur with iPad and iPhone 14.4 and am having SYNCH stopping at step 1. I can see both devices with File Manager, but they show a circle running around and around

I am having constant "Synching (Step 1 of 4) or "Synching (Step 1 of 8) with my iMac using Big Sur with my 14.4 iPhone and iPad devices. Any idea of what I can do to get this to actually work doing a back up?

This is what I mean simplify.

Keep the Time Capsule out of it.

Keep the iPad out of it.

Keep the external drive out of it.

Does the phone sync with one computer?

We need to go to the most simple solution, and then slowly build up to find out what the breaking point with one computer?

Does the phone sync with the other?

If it syncs with everything else out, then find out if eliminating the phone, and just connecting the iPad to sync works on one then the other?

The upside is, once you know both devices can sync to the computer alone, then you know your backups to the other devices will be up to date.

The problem is cross channel communication. Every bit of it is asynchronous. Meaning going one direction is faster than going the opposite direction. Too many cooks spoil the broth.

Ok. First step. iPhone is a 64 Gig machine, with 41 Gig available. Running 14.4 iOS on a iPhone 8 Plus.

Second step. iPad is a 128 Gig Machine with 97 Gig available. Running 14.4 iOS on a iPad Pro 4.0. (last of the 9.7 machines)

the iMac is a 1 TB machine with 856 Gig available. It's running Big Sur 11.2.3 on a 27 inch iMac Late 2014.

In All cases, both machines, individually while one is turned off, do Not Synch.

Also. iMac is on a Time Machine physical backup drive Direct connected via USB, and the documents and photos are backed up on a NAS>

Been there. Tied that. STILL Failed.

Oh. BTW. The NAS that I have is a Air Port Time Capsule, Software version 791, and it is the Last of the A1470s with the last of the EPROM upgrades. The NAS is acting as a store for Documents and Photos.

The NAS is NOT a Backup Device. The Backup device is a 2 TB La Cie that is Hard Cabled (USB) to the iMac. The NAS is a file share between devices.

Now, if the Airport (apple) is causing a Network communication failure because Apple Engineers didn't bother to do testing between Apple Products, then this is a more serious issue then others. If I cannot depend on a Apple Router to provide communication between a Apple iMac and a Apple iPhone and a apple iPad, then there is something rotten in Cerritos.
