setting up email

I am trying to set up email on my Mac for my iCloud account. I cannot seem to get anywhere. Once I select iCloud as the provider I am stuck and cannot go any further. When I am in mail the mailbox drop down menu is grey for anything related to getting mail. I am stuck and this should be very easy.

Are you able to add your account or sign into iCloud from System Preferences? If you're unsure, from the Apple menus choose System Preferences and based on your macOS do one of the following in the section "Set up a Mac" in the guide here: Set up iCloud Mail on your devices


We're also seeing an outage was recently resolved. System Status If you continue to have any issues, confirm the macOS you're using and how your Mac is connected to the internet, we'll take it from there.

Thanks for the information. It sounds like the issue is more related to receiving email from your iCloud account on your Mac rather than adding the account, correct?


If so, we recommend the following:


"If you can't receive mail in the Mail app on your Mac


  1. On the left side of the main Mail window, find the name of your iCloud email account. If your account name is dimmed and has a lightning-bolt symbol next to it, your account is offline.
  2. To take your account online, connect to the Internet.
  3. Choose Mailbox. If Take All Accounts Online is dimmed, your accounts are already online."

When the Mail app is open, are you seeing the window viewing from Mission Control? Check the section "Show or move all open windows" here: See open windows and spaces in Mission Control on Mac


Also, if you force quit the Mail app to re-open does the issue remain? How to force an app to quit on your Mac


If so, let us know if you are the administrator on this Mac, and test booting your Mac to safe mode to open the Mail app: Start up your Mac in safe mode

My machine tells me that iCloud account exists. It shows that both iCloud Drive and mail are using iCloud. My Mac OS is Big Sur 11.2.3

I also wanted to tell you that I can receive emails from the iCloud account on my iPhone and iPad, so the problem is only on the iMac. I would appreciate help at this point. I am stuck and have tried everything I can think of.
