SMC won't reset 2011 MacBookPro8,3

I can't change the brightness of my screen making this laptop useless for my purposes. I've been trying to SMC reset it, and it simply won't. I turned off the wifi and shut down, attempt the SMC reset (option-shift-control-power) and when I boot the clock hasn't been reset indicating it didn't work. The magsafe LED also fails to change color.

Is there another method I can try?

First an SMC Reset won't reset the date & time. A PRAM Reset is the one which changes the date & time. I think the NVRAM contains the brightness settings so a PRAM Reset is probably what you want to use.

Can you Option Boot the laptop? While sitting at the Apple Boot Picker menu perform the SMC Reset where if it works, then the laptop will power off.

Try running the Apple Diagnostics.

Have you tried to adjust the brightness from the Display System Preferences?
