how do i get a new IP address for my iPhone/devices if my ISP isn’t helping me do so?!

my isp says my service is providing dynamic ip addresses to my connected devices, but my iphone ip address NEVER changes. its literally been the SAME EXACT ip address for the last few YEARS- even if i get a new iphone, it remains with the same exact ip address as the one prior. i have reached out to my home WiFi isp as well as my cellular data service provider and both have basically said the same thing which is that my IP address being provided to my iPhone and connected devices is dynamic, and should definitely be changing sporadically. BUT THIS IS NOT CORRECT. AT ALL.

how can i get a new ip address if my ISPs/service provider(s) won’t help or aren’t being helpful in order to get this done? is there anything else i can do?! ANY response with guidance or assistance in helping me get this done would be EXTREMELY appreciated (so thank u, in advance, to anyone who helps me solve this problem! i am VERY grateful)

It is normal for a device to have the same IP address for long periods of time. If you are connected to Wi-Fi your phone’s IP address is a local network address, and will never change; depending on the router most likely it will be 192.168.something.something or 10.0.something.something. The IP address your router displays to the Internet will also rarely change; you can find out what it is by going to https://whatismyipaddress.com (Ignore the ad on this site for a service you don’t need).

The IP address for a cellular connection is determined by your carrier, and will vary as you move around. But if you stay in the same service area it most likely won’t change either.

Why do you want your IP address to change? Do you regularly change your house number on your street?

Your IP address is not a security risk; having the same IP address does not make any other security steps “null and void”; I have no idea where you saw such cockamamie nonsense. Changing your IP address is neither necessary nor sufficient for securing your devices. Even if you could change it, the first time you connected to anything your IP address would be known around the world, unless you could change it every time you went online. But then no websites or apps would work, because when they respond to you they connect to your IP address. Think about it for a moment: Apple.com has had the same IP address for 40 years; does it have weak security? So does the White House. How is it’s security? And how about https://www.nsa.gov; do you think they are insecure?

However, if you have inexpensive Internet of Things devices such as security cameras they certainly are security risks. And so is your router if it’s firmware is not up to date or if the router is more than 5 years old. A VPN connection will change your IP address, but it will also put you at risk because not all VPN providers are honest; actually, most are not, so that is not a good solution either.

No, I don’t change my house # because I already have a hard enough time making sure all my packages are delivered while using the one same address every time! HA!

Thanks for the response, and I often use the site you suggested but it only provides details about the IP address that I already know and would like to change.

The reason being is that I have had some security issues, and although I’m not very “tech-savvy” AT ALL, from the research I’ve done and the technologically intelligent people I’ve recently spoken with about the handful of security / privacy issues I’ve experienced, it seems to be a common theme in all the suggestions and advice I’ve been given that changing my IP address is a necessary step in order to securing my devices / data and making sure the other steps I will take thereafter aren’t a waste of time since remaining with the same IP address will sort of null and void the other things I might do, which I certainly don’t want to spend time doing that will be wasteful.

Thanks again for responding and sharing your thoughts and advice! Much appreciated =)

There are ways to manually change your IP address, but seeing as you willingly admit that you are not tech savvy, I would not advise trying to do something like that. While changing your IP address is one way to help cybersecurity, the biggest things you can do are

  1. Not reuse passwords
  2. Change passwords frequently (about every 60 days)
  3. Do not give websites your personal information (including e-mail addresses) unless you know and trust the company

Altogether pretty common sense stuff, but can make a world of a difference. Using a VPN (if legal in your area) is also another way to keep your traffic secure, but make sure you aren't using some free thing off the internet that you found, as that could pose a risk as well. The key is doing the research and keeping up with your security.

Yes. That’s a perfect example: I have home security cameras that I’ve recently learned are constantly live streaming if someone is eager enough and knows how to obtain the IP address for my cams as well as the streaming url / site for each one, they can watch me or my cams whenever they want without me knowing. this is a perfect example of one of the reasons I was looking to change my IP address / IP address of my connected devices.
