I'm experiencing the same issue. I'm told it's related to quicktime and an update that was made.
Not all videos do this, but videos that used to play perfectly, now feature popping/crackling and go out of sync.
They can be re-encoded and fixed, but that's not practicable with a large catalogue of owned videos.
I have tried to find what it is in a file that means it is affected by this "bug" but so far no joy. Interestingly most of my files are re-encoded using Handbrake and yet a number of them still suffer. Trouble is that with over 1500 files to look at, it all takes time and as yet no common threads.
Hey,
It does sound like a bug...
You can report it to Apple here https://www.apple.com/feedback/macos.html
Sorry I wasn't of any help.
all the mp4 movie files that i tried playing before big sur 11.3 played absolutely fine both through quicktime and the tv app
now with 11.3 all those same files are out of whack....
Something is off or there is an audio bug!
im on a m1 mac mini
my mp4 movie files' audio has crackling noise during playback
and the audio is out of synch with the playback
Update - No device listed under System Prefs>Sound>Output in Safe Mode. Must be a bug.
After updating to Big Sur 11.3, I also experience audio crackling from time to time, and YouTube videos not playing well (on latest Chrome, Firefox, Safari).
MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)
I also have the same problem, not only on mac, tvos, but also on ios, which was normal before ios 14.5.
Play for a while, there is a noise, there will be a sound out of sync problem.
I’m having audio problems trying to watch movies: is starts playback out of sync then there’s no audio at all but the movie continues to play.
Didn’t work for me either lol.
regarding Your library you could manually drag the files out of the ‘new’ one and back into the 11.2.3 one via finder. Might be a pain in the *** but it should work.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I've got over 70,000 files in my library and I don't want to lose play counts, last played etc.
I'm back on with Apple now... let's see what they suggest next...
Yes, same crackling noise with .mp4 movies. M1 Mac mini with OS 11.4
Apple...paleeeeeeeese!
