can't get my Apple TV+ app to let me. watch home videos

I have OSX high Sierra 10.13.6 and iTunes 12.8.2.3.

  1. I authorized my computer,
  2. under the little "tv" icon in the menu bar I have the Apple TV icon and computer icon selected,
  3. and under sharing preferences I have shared my entire library selected.
  4. turned on home sharing

I have a Samsung UTU8000 TV and when I open. the apple plus app, I can get the library, but can't seem to play the video I have loaded on my iMac.

Can you help me with what I am doing wrong here?

The Apple TV app on smart TVs doesn’t support Home Sharing,

only iTunes Store movies and TV shows, Apple TV+, and other premium Apple TV app Channels.

In order to use Home Sharing on your TV, you will need an Apple TV set-top box. Apple TV app vs. Apple TV box - Apple Community

  • You can “hook up” wired with an HDMI cable. Then the TV becomes a second monitor or mirrored monitor (user choice).
  • You can “hook up” through the network with AirPlay (if your TV or streaming device supports AirPlay), and stream that way. In-app AirPlay from QuickTime Player is untouched quality.
  • You can “hook up” through the network for AirPlay Screen Mirroring. This will be capturing the computer screen and re-encoding it as a live stream, but the quality loss is minimal. It is more work for the sending device, and more taxing on the network (high bitrate) though, potentially causing frame drops if limits are reached.
