Locked phone with too many passcode attempts message

Apple Watch was paired with old phone. After I got a new iphone12, watch quit working with other devices. Now I have a message saying ‘too many passcode attempts.. “ (even though I have not been trying to change anything until now. Watch is locked and doesn’t snow ‘i’ on screen. Device doesn’t show up I my device list. Can’t get ‘to it’ to change it. Help!
