Windows 10 Brightness Issue in BootCamp

There seems a major issue with brightness when updating video drivers for Windows 10 in BootCamp. This could be a known issue as I have seen mention of this in some forums. Could someone at Apple respond. FYI, I got my Mac up and running, but after a couple of days of trial-n-error. I gave a synopsis of what I went through, minus all the technical jargon to get through each step.

Here is what I have:

  • MacBook Pro 15, mid-2015, AMD Radeon R9 M370X
  • Latest Big Sur
  • Latest Windows 10
  • BootCamp
  • Dell UltraSharp 25 USB-C Monitor

The issue started with me with I purchased the Dell monitor. I plugged in the monitor and there was no HDMI signal in Windows but it was there in Apple. My first thought was updating my AMD driver for Windows. After a little reading I deleted the driver before doing the update. This is where my problem began. As soon as I updated the driver, I got the emphasis BLACK SCREEN. One would think there is a simple solution with all the complaints I have read, but nothing helped at all after all my reading and 1-2 days of trial-n-error with everyone's recommendations in many different forums. I found the only way to get rid of the black screen was to be in safe mode in Windows 10 and disable the display adapter. I could reboot to normal mode but my Dell monitor would not work. I was able try any updates in normal mode. However, as soon as I would do any updates, whether it was from BootCamp Assistant or the proper AMD updates for BootCamp, the update would enable the display adapter and my screen would go BLACK during the update. I fussed with this for a while, back and forth from safe mode to normal, and the display adapter being re-enabled by any updates I tried.

Then, by pure accident, I found that the BLACK SCREEN was not a blank screen as I assumed. A light hit the back of my laptop right at the translucent "Apple" and I could see a tiny portion of my BLACK Windows screen. WOW! UNBELIEVABLE! So, I put a halogen light on it and I could function in the center of my Windows screen. I would move my mouse to grab the top bar of the update window to drag it in my view and I was able to see to finish my updates. However, the latest BootCamp Assistance and AMD updates did not work. So, I fussed back to safe mode to disable the display adapter, and grabbed the previous update from AMD. This one did not work, nor the oldest available.

My brain was in gear now. Whenever my display adapter was disables I could see the Windows screen, but the brightness slider was not available, because the adapter was disabled. So, I went through the process of disabling the adapter again. Then I opened the system/display, and made it a small window centered in the middle of my screen so I could get to it easily when things went BLACK. I enabled the display adapter, and as usual it went BLACK. I put my light on the Apple and low-and-behold I could see the brightness slider. I drug the slider from 0% to 100%, rebooted, AND I AM UP AND RUNNING WITH NO BLACK SCREEN, AND MY NEW DELL MONITOR WORKS LIKE A CHAMP!

Apparently, when a video driver is updated, all video drivers including the Windows default are set to 0% brightness. This gives the appearance of a BLANK SCREEN when in reality it is a BLACK SCREEN.

HELLO APPLE! CAN YOU FIX THIS MESS?

I left my AMD driver as the oldest available. I will not update until I hear from someone here, it is too big of a headache, and I am way behind in my work.
