iPhone has spinning wheel of death with black screen behind it

My iPhone froze on me whilst scrolling through social media, tried to restart - couldn't (ie nothing happened), forced restart (which again nothing happened) and am now faced with a constant spinning wheel. Started doing this about an hour prior to this upload.
