How does one remove all of the long list of non-existent storage locations that show up when one tries to move the locations of a file?
It's crazy. I have locations that have not existed for years and, yet, they still show up in the drop-down list for moving a file.
I looked a bit more into it.
I suppose you mean this:
I never use the Save or Save As... in this "closed" form.
The list of "Favorites" corresponds to your own Favorites, as you've set them in the Finder Sidebar.
If you no longer use some of them, just remove them from the Sidebar.
Open a Finder window, control-click on such an item, and choose "Remove from Sidebar"

Okay, this is finally making sense - except for three of those items are long gone from the sidebar. Unfortunately, two of those are long gone from the sidebar but still show up in the drop-down "where" menu.
I believe those items were on removable storage. When they were gone, they were gone from the sidebar but not the "where".
That is helpful, though.
How long is that list?
What are you settings for "recent" in System Preferences->General?
That doesn't clear the "Favorites" from the drop down list at the top of the file when you try to move the file by clicking on "where:". The recent seems to be okay.
