Why does my external hard drive not save the locations of files within a folder?

I am using an iMac with OSX 10.10.5

I have always used external hard drives both for extra space and also to back up files already on my computer. I recently got a new external hard drive and it is behaving in an unusual (and problematic manner). The file locations within a folder are moving, seemingly at random. To clarify, the files are all there, and they remain in the folder I put them in, but I like to group certain files together. For example, I might drag a group of files to the upper left area of the folder, followed by another group below that, etc., as opposed to sorting them alphabetically, by date, etc. It seems that some files are staying where I put them, but others (mostly newer files) are moving around. When I do control+click, and select "show view options," both "arrange by" and "sort by" are set to "none." Folders on my actual iMac with the same setting are acting normally (maintaining where I put the file within the folder).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As long as it is set to none, it should preserve the layout of the window as it was last opened.

Keep in mind, if you didn't format the drive for the Mac in the first place, it may not remember your preferences.

All Mac drives before you start using them, must either be formatted HFS Extended Journalled or APFS if you are using High Sierra or later.

Also Yosemite is slowly becoming obsolete. At some point you'll want to upgrade to Mojave:
