Samsung X5 SSD APFS Format Fail

Trying to format a new Samsung X5 SSD drive. Changed the partition to GUID and selected APFS. It starts erasing/formatting, changes it to Mac OS Extended Journaled and then in the process of creating the APFS format, fails and says it can't unmount the drive due to some kernel issue. Is it not possible to format this drive in APFS?

Got help from Apple support and solved this. Rebooted the MBP in safe mode and it formatted APFS just fine. Rebooted and copied a bunch of files to the drive and it's working great.

Make sure you are using the proper thunderbolt cables. Make sure you have a wall powered USB hub to connect the computer, otherwise, it won't have sufficient power to maintain the connection to the hard drive.

There are numerous USB-C ports with a PD passthrough USB-C port. These should be a minimum of 100W to make use of sufficient power.
