Numbers unable to open xls file

I am unable to open/import an xls file using Numbers on MacOS Big Sur. A pop up window appears stating that file cannot be imported because "This document was created with an unsupported version of Excel". Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know of a fix?

No fix exactly. Excel's format has changed over the years. Numbers will open newer xls files but not old xls files. I assume LibreOffice (a free Office-like clone available online) can open old xls files, which you could then save in a newer format which you could open with (import into) Numbers.
