Do AirTags only make a sound if disconnected and if moved?

Do I understand correctly, the AirTags only makes a sound if disconnected AND if moved? I plan to leave it in my car, which I park at various spots and sometimes forget where that is, as I sometimes don't use it weeks.

It would be inconvenient, if the AiTag beeps all the time.

This is supposedly a feature that makes the tag chirp if it's been separated from the phone it was associated with for three days or more. I think the idea is that someone would hear it and then they could bring it near any iPhone to discover if the owner has reported it lost.

AirTags Separated From Owners for Three Days or More Play Audible Sound When Moved

Since my wife went away for the week I need to take it off the dog before she has a nervous breakdown (my dog, not my wife, but my wife would have one too if she saw the dog freak out when the tag goes off!).

Mine did this early on - my keys a few times as I wrote about, and my bag once. Now however, this has not happened in a number of weeks. So it appears to have cleared up somehow.

This seems to have occurred for a few of us but, based on the few folks on this thread, doesn't seem like it's very common. Trying for a theory, I'm wondering if we share a common characteristic with respect to Apple which caused this to happen to us? I have two apple IDs (which is a constant hassle). I have my original Apple ID for "media and purchases". I have a second Apple ID for iCloud. When my keys were chiming, it was almost like it didn't know I was me, so to speak. I wonder if there was some confusion about Apple ID association with the AirTag, and then this somehow got fixed. I think my AirTags should be associated with my iCloud ID (although I don't find a way to really verify that). Just a theory, but I thought I'd add this to the thread in case we share having multiple Apple IDs in common.

All mine have been doing it too. I am on vacation and I have one in my backpack, keys and my wallet. The one in my backpack makes noise every time I move it. I don’t use it much but anytime I move it it makes noise. The key one will do it randomly when it’s moved but my wife takes it without me sometimes. But my wallet, which I use daily, does it all the time. Especially in the morning after it has been sitting overnight. I am with a lot of family and they constantly get notifications saying an air tag is traveling with them too. Super annoying.

Has happened to all 3 of my air tags, including just now when I’ve been watching tv in bed with the airtag next to me for 2 hours. Get up to go to the bathroom and bump the airtag and it pings. I never turn Bluetooth off. It’s happened with the others when I’ve been away from them for maybe 30 mins but as soon as I get close to them they ping. So going out the back of the house and then inside. Makes no sense, I’ll ring them if I want them. Stupid “feature” if that’s what it’s meant to be.

Two of my four also made a sound, different than in the sound explanations, when moved, but they only did this for a short time, maybe a few days, after I got them. Then they stopped and this hasn’t repeated since. Question for everyone: Has this happened over an extended time and still continuing, or did it happen for maybe a few days when new, and then stop ?

Mine stopped. Weirdly, around the same time it was doing that, I wasn’t able to ping the items - when I would go into Find My it said the item (my dog, my keys) were with me, and wouldn’t let me play the sound from my phone or track distance. The random ringing stops and now I can use Find My to track and play a sound again. Go figure.

Please contact Apple Support via phone if you are having this problem. They told me no one from Apple monitors these pages anymore. I have an open case with them and have been helping them try to figure out what is going on. Since resetting all mine, I’ve only had one go off the following day and none of them have done it since. They told me today to email them back if it does it again. I have been dealing with a higher level support agent and they really want to figure out what is going on. If you have a recording of the sound, even better.

This simply isn’t true. They may be designed or intended to operate that way but there is clearly a problem and it isn’t just my own airtag by the number of comments. My airtag repeatedly beeps without any request made. Today it randomly started ringing while I was on a work call. It was right next to my phone. No one was requesting anything or changing the state of bluetooth or anything else related. Nothing was even moving.

Mine still do this about every three weeks. They will not make a noise as how they are supposed to operate then in three weeks time they all start chirping. Every time they are moved. The keys sit overnight. In the morning when I move them they chirp. When my dog moves from her nap they chirp. This is consistent with all four of my air tags. There are no new devices that have been introduced into my home. Nothing has changed. They are still all doing this. This is embarrassing as I have one in my vehicle and every time I enter my vehicle it’s such chirping. I have to tell my passengers to ignore it.
