Do I understand correctly, the AirTags only makes a sound if disconnected AND if moved? I plan to leave it in my car, which I park at various spots and sometimes forget where that is, as I sometimes don't use it weeks.
It would be inconvenient, if the AiTag beeps all the time.

This is supposedly a feature that makes the tag chirp if it's been separated from the phone it was associated with for three days or more. I think the idea is that someone would hear it and then they could bring it near any iPhone to discover if the owner has reported it lost.

Since my wife went away for the week I need to take it off the dog before she has a nervous breakdown (my dog, not my wife, but my wife would have one too if she saw the dog freak out when the tag goes off!).
I’ll try keeping Bluetooth turned on permanently then. But if it a question of the tag communicating with the phone, what will happen when the air tag is lost (is separated) from the phone? Will the tag start to chirrup, thus alerting someone nearby of its presence? I really don’t see the logic here.
yeah you are right a bunch of people here are talking about the normal operation of airtags which is they will beep when separated from the user, that is the point for privacy reasons same as a NFC warning will pop up that one is near you and that wasn't my question at all - my tags beep when I am within 30m of them and go up close to them, so not separated and also within my own phones range - that is not normal operation.
Incidentally, it hasn't happened for a few weeks now. Maybe its a "reminder" that you own airtags lol
My airtag started doing this recently. It just starts beeping randomly on its own. It put it on my dogs collar and he gets so confused when it happens. Would be great if there was an update from Apple on this issue.
Disappointing that Apple hasn't responded (unless I missed it?), but adding that two of my AirTags have also started chiming. I did recently change my Apple password and just got a message that I needed to log back in on my phone for full functionality to be available - wonder if that had something to do with it?
Me too , I hide one in the car , I don’t use the car every day , when i do I hear a beeping for a short while (sounds like water sloshing in water bottle)… I thought it was only suppose to beep, if it was near another persons phone.
Had the same issue. It turns out I had to reset it. Remove and put back in the battery 4 or 5 times. It will make a different sound at some point. That means it got reset and now should be able to pair
YES!! This is the same thing I am experiencing. I have 2 dogs each with an AirTag on their collar. They are definitely within bluetooth range of me. We have 2 other people in the house with their own appleId and their own devices. I have isolated the issue to when the dog moves suddenly (jumps up when the doorbell rings, gets up from a nap). They seem to chime when 4-5 times a day on each dog too. What I haven't figured out is a pattern to how many times it chimes per event. Sometimes it goes off for 3 times, others 8 times per episode.
Luckily the dogs aren't bothered by it, but it is going to kill the battery going off this much. Would really love an explanation.
Wow, so I have a useless device really.
If someone tries to steal my bag there is going to be no way to track them now!
Once they hear the sound they are going to remove it instantly from the bag.

I have one on my keys. There seems to be several random chirps when I move my phone or ear buds near the airbag. I cannot tell what is the trigger.
What you seem to be saying is that this is daily check-in between the tag and the phone. Generally, the phone is no more than 10 feet away even at night. In some way this makes sense, but I feel we should be told.
My husband’s AirTag has also made a quiet “chirping” sound twice since we have gotten them a few weeks ago. Both times, his keys were hanging on the key rack and as he picked them up to go out, the chirp-like noise began. I have several other AirTags and not one of them has done this odd noise with no provocation. I guess misery loves company because after much research on the internet about the subject, this is the first I’ve found anything about someone else’s AirTag doing this. This actually puts me at ease that his is not the only one, haha. Thank you for this notification on the subject!
Got one for our dog, her behavior totally changed and she became a nervous wreck. We realized the tag was randomly chirping! We’ve removed the tag from her collar and hope she recovers from the emotional distress it has caused her
This is no joke Apple … you need to place a clear product warning on the product.

Same here. We have four airtags, three currently in use, and only one keeps randomly making noise.
Mine seems to have stopped doing this now so maybe it's a temporary glitch
