Audio Video sync issues after update to 14.5 of appleTV

I have this new and strange issue with ’two’ 4K appleTVs each connected to a separate TV since newest update. Never ever had this before using it for years. One appleTV is connected by WiFi the other by Ethernet. No other changes were done except updating to 14.5. The audio goes ahead of the video after a few minutes into the movie. I stop the movie and exit the player, then resume playing the video and soon after the situation is the same. Unwatchable.

It goes with that on each and every video I play from my computer by home sharing of my library.

I tried reseting the video setting in appleTv settings, changed audio mode from auto to 16bit, match content on and off. Nothing helped.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Exact same issue on my end. If I stream any video through my shared library on the Apple TV 4K, the audio gets out of sync after a few minutes. Other streaming apps (Netflix, Disney +, etc.) do not have any audio sync issues.

I moved my entire content library over to Plex and there are no audio issues to speak of. I think that identifies the Apple TV app on the Mac as the main culprit since the issue only pops up when streaming from my shared library. Not sure there are any settings to adjust to fix this issue and I suppose we have to hope it's fixed with the next update.

I was having the same issues with my AppleTV on my video collection. I found it was happening on videos where my audio was encoded with AAC. I've heard others say it happens with ALAC too. Apple Support had me take my device in for repair and since it was still under warranty they just replaced it with a new one. Luckily the new one has tvos 14.4 still installed so I am back to being able to watch my movies again. Unfortunately I didn't get my iPad and iPhone downgraded in time so I still have audio issues when using those devices.

Hopefully Apple will figure out what they broke and get it fixed soon.

I have done a bit more testing on this. I believe the issue is more with the TV app than AppleTV. Even when watching shows from my library on my MacMini, I experience the same audio issues. This even happens with programs I have watched in the past.

I have a second Mac that I did not run any updates done recently and there are ZERO issues while watching the same files. This again makes me lean towards a Big Sur update not just Mac update.

I can't find any setting that will let me adjust the frame rate so that this does not happen. It has basically bricked my AppleTV and TV library. I ordered the new AppleTV last week but if Apple can't fix this soon, I will be canceling that order.

Hi everyone. I’m having the same issue. I have Apple TV 4K (1st gen) and I am running iTunes on Windows 10 laptop with home sharing enabled. Connected to that is my 8TB external hard drive which stores all my video content. If I select a video to play from within the Apple TV interface then I get the issue. However, if I select a video to play from within iTunes and using the Airplay feature then it plays back perfectly with no issues? It’s not a solution but it’s a workaround for now until Apple sort this. Can someone else here who has had these issues try this and see if it works?

thanks

Steve

Gave apple support a call - like y’all have probably already done.

apparently it’s a well known fault and their engineers are working on a fix.

can expect it to be in a future os release.

what I don’t get is how this isn’t an urgent priority fix - surely they know what the problem is (it worked a couple of months back), and, this has severely impacted base use of Apple TV…

I guess, watch this space.

Exactly as you describe. It only happens on playing movies of ones own library on content that is shared by a Mac. It doesn't happen with other streaming services like aTV+, etc. My movies all play fine directly on my mac.

Wondering why not many others are chiming in but probably everyone is on streaming services nowadays :(

If it doesn't get fixed it will lead me to direct attach my Mac Pro 2019 to my TV and play from there (which will be a hassle as one loses all the controlling features of the appleTV and it's remote.

Strange things go on here, but I guess you are right in this.

If I play a movie right on my Mac Pro with aTV app the movie gets out of sync at some point. But if I 'stream' the very same movie out of the aTV app on my Mac to the AppleTV device it plays smooth (strangely). If I play the movie on my Mac with the VLC app it plays nicely as well. But if I go and watch the same movie from selecting it directly from within the appleTV box and playing it from there (shared library) it gets messy again.

Maybe you could confirm the same?

Actually I put it wrong in my initial post I do not have two AppleTV 4K they are both appleTV HD (AppleTV5,3).

I don't have a clue what could be done or changed here, but if someone has please let us all know.

Thanks for chiming in.

Put me in the same basket.

I asked the same question in here yesterday (only just found this thread).

have just replace one 4th gen 4K with a 5th gen because I thought it was the hardware. Once I updated firmware I have the same problem.

I have also updated firmware on a second 4k (before I knew better) and it’s now unusable, too.

I am also getting major crackle and audio quality issues to match the audio sync.

very far from impressed.

just read about plex in this thread and will look into it now - but as it stands, my digital library is unusable and a new Apple TV has been purchased for no reason.

It doesn't look like there is a solution to this around the corner.

There are various threads around this topic in the AppleTV discussions. Some have the problem on this aTV box some on that one and some on all (like me on to aTV HD and a brand new 4K). Some have additional crackle issues, some not. Some have it with that kind of video file, some with others types. It looks complicated to eliminate the problem.

Not sure if Apple is really monitoring these forums, some state they don't at all. We probably should all file an official support request in order to get more attention here.

Anyway, thank you all for chiming in here on this and trying to figure it out.

I am having the same issue and I am beyond frustrated. I have built a large library over the years and now many of the shows and movies are not watchable. I am only having issues with my library. Hulu; Netflix, etc., all work fine. This is only impacting what is in my library.

I also have tried switching various settings but nothing has worked. Some other discussions referred to the frame rate being an issue on some programs. I took one video and changed the frame rate before encoding it but that did not resolve the issue.

I believe that something Apple did with the update has changed a setting we do not have access to and they need to find a way to fix this. While Apple TV is a great for streaming, many of us use it to view libraries we have created over the years and taking this feature away will cause me to ditch the device in favor of something else.
