AMEX won’t add to new iPhone, but is still on Apple Watch

I have three cards on Apple Pay; two AMEX and one Apple card. All three are on my Apple Watch and MacBook and work fine. I got a new iPhone and it won’t let me add one of Amex cards. When I click the + button, it knows there should be that card in there because the last 4 digits show up, but it won’t add when I enter the four digit verification code. It just says ‘Could not add card’. Any ideas?

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with adding details for your card to use with Apple Pay. We're happy to help.


When checking the details on your new iPhone are you able to completely remove the card at all? If not, when checking your billing information is it showing correctly? The section "Update your billing and contact information" from the article here can help: Manage the cards that you use with Apple Pay


If the issue continues, test force closing the settings app and restarting your iPhone to enter in the information again. If needed, this guide can help with force close the app: Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch


After restarting use the "Add a different card" option and manually enter in the details of your card to test. Keep us posted on the results or let us know if you have any questions about the steps.

Same issue, however started as an separate issue with Apple Watch. Had to re-pair the watch which forces a re-add of all cards.


Now unable to re-add 3 AmEx cards to wallet or watch, all other cards added without issue.


Apple sent me to AmEx who sent me to Apple who sent me to AmEx who sent me back to Apple. Escalated at AmEx but nothing on their end showed my card even getting verified by them but shows cards removed.


Open ticket with Apple, no one has an answer. Haven’t heard back from my rep. It’s been 2 weeks and these cards worked fine before they were removed.


14.5 dropped day before the issue which I assumed may have been the cause, 14.5.1 dropped and no change.


I have removed cards, re-added cards only AmEx fails, signed out of iCloud/signed back in, verified my address in phone, rebooted. Nothing. Absolutely irritating.


Update:

Was finally able to add 1 of 3 cards to Wallet. The 1 card won’t add to Watch.
