Using only external display with a macbook

I'm trying to use an external display with a macbook 2017 with the lid closed, but when I close the lid the macbook goes to sleep and the external monitor disconnects. Nothing happens clicking an external keyboard. What can I do to use an external display with the lid down on the laptop.

external display I have an external display that I want to use as my primary display with my MacBook lid closed. I have the display connected to my MacBook with a usb-c to Display Port cable and the it works fine with the lid open. When I close the lid, the primary desktop switches to the external display for a few seconds and then the display goes to sleep. If I press a key on the keyboard, it will wake with the primary desktop on the external monitor for a few seconds then the display will switch to no signal. Is there something specific I have to do to use the external display with the MacBook lid closed?

Using the mac with an external display I have an external display which I use regularly and an external keyboard/mouse combo that i've paired to my mac. I don't always need to use the display as an extended desktop. There doesn't seem to be an option to close the lid and work using only the external display, unless the charger is connected to the macbook. This means that I have to have the charger connected at all times. I understand that this is a practice discouraged by Apple as it can impact the battery life of the macbook. The only other option seem to be to keep the displays mirrored, and then to turn the brightness of the retina display to zero which switches off the display. But if i close the lid, the system goes into sleep mode. This is counterproductive. Is there a way around this?
