iPadOS 14.5 Audio Skipping and Glitching

Hi! Just putting this out here.

Ever since I updated to the new iPadOS 14.5 and 14.5.1, I’ve been having some stupid audio issue that never occurred before. I constantly have to unplug the earbuds to fix the reoccurring issue. Basically if audio plays and the bug happens, the audio is fine, but would skip or glitch out. It’s still audible, just with annoying glitches and cuts. It can happen in any app.

This is not my earbuds but rather the update. My audio has been working PERFECTLY fine until yesterday, when I updated to iOS 14.5. Also, this is an iPad Air 4. I’ve tried everythinf (from restarting and many other things) and it’s still there. Hopefully Apple fixes this bug in a future update. I work on videos and things that use audio. The timing will be messed up because of the bug.

Anyone else who is experiencing this or any suggestions? I would appreciate it! Thanks :D

Hi - I am having the same exact issue. I have tried 2 Apple USB C to 3.5mm dongles and tried 3 different pairs of headphones (including one with an in-line mic). It seems multi-tasking with any apps that have audio/video triggers this audio skipping issue for me and then won't stop skipping until I unplug/reinsert headphones or restart the iPad. Once this issue starts, all apps are impacted (YouTube, Apple Music, Safari, etc).

I bought my iPad less then 1 week ago and the audio was fine the first few days and then the same audio issue started happening. Updated to 14.5.1 last night hoping it would fix the audio problem but still persists. I am under AppleCare and contacted Apple yesterday, they told me to go to Best Buy (where I purchased it) and meet with their Apple authorized technician. The technician could not figure it out either but said they were seeing other people with this issue. The technician did a Reset All Settings but as he suspected it's an OS issue, he couldn't do much else. I ended up exchanging the iPad for a new one and currently waiting for everything to re-download. I'll try and give you an update tomorrow.

iPad Air 2020 producing an audio spike/glitch over USB digital out approx every 30 seconds. I am connecting the iPad Air to my Mac Pro via the USB-C connector. In the Ecamm video podcast application the iPad is a "source". The iPad audio plays fine (as Ecamm input source) but now glitches at semi random intervals of 30-45 seconds. A loud buzz or digital noise is heard every 30 seconds. This was not happening prior to the latest IOS update. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP!!!!

Hello!

The same problem happens with my new M1 11 inch ipad pro. I have tried two apple adapters and both fail with different headphones. They work at first, but after a while there is interference and sound cuts. The sound in the videos also sounds out of step at times.

Fearing that it may be a hardware failure, I was thinking of returning the device because support does not confirm to me that it is a software issue.

I would like the manufacturer talk about these problems and say if they are looking for a solution.

Thank you all for sharing.

Same issue described here. Brand new iPad Pro 11” M1. In my case, I’ve noticed that audio is fine in Apple Music until the display goes to sleep. Then it sounds like a CD skipping. Netflix and Hulu have a glitch sound every 4 seconds or so.

Semi-related:

It seems there is no Apple-supported USB-C adapter for the new iPads with a charging port and headphone port. There are display adapters and the Apple headphone adapter without a charging port. I purchased a Belkin charger/headphone jack adapter but only the charger side worked.

Another semi-related issue:

I’ve also noticed that the lowest possible volume setting is much louder than my previous iPad Pro (1st gen). I often sleep with headphones in and the new M1 11” is too loud on the lowest setting.

I’ve had it since late April! 2 months, and Apple hasn’t fixed anything. I’ve read other people’s replies and really shows how problematic this issue is. I noticed that if I quit the specific app I’m looking at, the bug sometimes goes away. It’s way more easier to do this than constantly unplug and replug the adapter. Factory reset or anything really won’t help, since it’s an OS system bug (however, there are temporary fixes).

I’m glad to find a forum about the same problem I’m having thats not from 2013, but discouraged that nothing seems to be working for everyone else either. I have an iPad Pro 3rd gen updated to 14.6 and i just noticed this problem today. I can’t tell if I just didn’t notice it before now or if it just started, since I usually listen to music on my android phone. But I swear earlier this afternoon it wasn’t clipping until an hour or so ago. It doesn’t skip around or have cuts, but I can hear a crunchy clipping sound for higher and lower bass frequencies. Even when the volume is turned down its still there. I can hear it on both my wired headphones AND my Bluetooth headphones. Same clipping in the same spots, and it’s impossible to ignore. Both sound completely smooth when connected to my phone. I already restarted my iPad and it didn’t do anything… I’m really bummed out. Part of the reason I invested in this expensive device was for music editing. It’s still useful for everything else, but that function was a big factor.

I have the same issue with my new 11-inch iPad Pro when using the USB-C adapter and headphones (which is the only way I listen to audio). It almost seems like a buffering problem to me. It tends to happen right after I start playing a video or audio, or when trying to do some multitasking.

I can generally fix it by unplugging the adapter and plugging it back in. But obviously, that’s not a convenient (or permanent) solution.

I have something related (i think). When i searched an online dictionary to hear a word pronounced, the first time I clicked the audio icon (speaker icon) to hear it, i hear the whole word — all syllables. But 2nd, 3rd, continued times, i don’t hear the first syllable anymore, only the rest. For example: I looked up the word ‘DEPUTE’, and first time i clicked the audio icon i hear the whole thing ‘DEH-PYOOT’. Thereafter, i only hear ‘PYOOT’. Same thing happened on other words. I checked ipad speaker level, it happens at all levels.

So, here's something interesting: I replied earlier to say that I've been having the same problems when using the USB-C to 3.5mm adapter and my wired ear buds. But today, I've been using a USB-C to USB 2 adapter with an external digital audio converter (an Apogee Duet), and I haven't had the glitching. ...I do have two of the USB-C to 3.5mm adapters, though, so either they all are bad, or there's some other issue.

Well - I am using a USB-C to USB 2.0 input on my Mac Pro 2013. I then open Ecamm Live (Podcast app) which recognizes the iPad as a Video/Audio source input. This has worked flawlessly until iOS 14.6. In essence I am doing the same thing - going digital out to digital in with just a conversion cable (USB-C to USB-2.0)... With this setup - approx every 20-40 seconds (variable) there is a buzz or electrical noise for about 2 seconds and then the cycle repeats. Even the "buzz" is variable in time and frequency... usually the same but every so often it is more like a step function, sharp glitch.

It seems to me that Apple's engineering staff has been compromised... This is unacceptable - especially for how long this issue has been happening.... Get with it Apple... remember second place is simply the first loser! v/r. Professor Truth

So it seems like Apple are determined to completely ignore this issue.

Does anyone have any ideas for how we can escalate this and pressure them into fixing it already? It’s legitimately unbelievable that I’ve been unable to work on my iPad for 2 months now because Apple will not do anything.

I’ve submitted several bug reports and spoken with multiple Apple representatives but nothing makes any difference.

Pulling my hair out over this. This isn’t some minor glitch that affects a small function, we’re talking about audio being fundamentally broken. Its absolutely shocking.

Right now, instead of the next song on the Music app, white noise at full volume start playing for 1 sec. Good job Apple.

If you can’t plug your headphones into any device, then when the Apple is starting to give free Airpods?? Or maybe pay for my hearing aid devices after few more white noise booms like that.

PS: If you call Apple support they fuck you off. Perfect

I have a hunch that this issue is due to cheap electronics in the dongle not being able to keep up with and convert the info being sent to it from iOS 14.6

Have been using an external DAC today via a USB-C to USB 2 dongle with no problems and excellent sound quality.

So, I’m gonna return the mini-jack dongle as faulty and look for a decent third party usb-c mini DAC.

Apple will probably resolve this in the near future without an apology but it’s things like this that start people looking for alternatives themselves.
