Mac Mini M1 slow cursor and scrolling

I just bought a Mac Mini M1 16gb. The first thing I noticed is how slow, choppy, laggy the UI is, in particular cursor tracking and scrolling. I’ve tried three different mice, a wired Microsoft comfort mouse, a wireless Logitech MX Pro 3 in both Bluetooth and unifying reciever mode, and a Logitech M720 as well. All work perfectly on my Windows machine but feel like they are stuck in glitchy molasses on the Mac. Tried updating Big Sur, Safari Tech Preview, mouse speed, Logitech software, command line acceleration disable, nothing works. It’s an incredibly handicapped feeling and if there isn’t a solution then I think I’ll probably have to just return the machine. It’s unfortunate as I wanted to be able to program for iOS in Xcode, but I couldn’t imagine spending any amount of time working in such an slow environment.

I’ve seen a number of other threads reporting the same thing. Figured I would add this one to the list. Was planning on going full Apple ecosystem, but if the center of it, the main machine is like this…

Mac mini, macOS 11.3

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for your reply. I have a theory as to what the problem is. Since it persisted across 3 different mice, one of them a standard wired mouse, another designed for Mac, I've ruled out incompatibilities with mice.

I believe the issue is that the computer isn't outputting 4K60hz, but instead 4K30hz. I'm unable to find out if that is the case though because on an unrelated note, the computer died. It's been dropped off to my local Apple store and will take 2-3 weeks to repair. Something to do with the wireless chip let out the smoke. (It had a total of 6 hours running time from when I unboxed it the night before, lol)

In a preliminary test of sorts, I set my Windows machine to 30hz refresh rate, and sure enough the lag seemed exactly like what I was experiencing on the Mac Mini. I used the same HDMI 2.0 cable and 4K monitor as was connected to the Mac, so it's unlikely to be an issue with one of those.

I'll update this once I get the Mini back.

Best Regards,

Shawn

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities Shawn3113,

Thank you for reaching out to us in regards to your MacMini M1 and mousing issues. We would recommend reaching out to Logitech and see if there is an issue with the M1 chip or Big Sur compatibility and if so, if they have a fix for this. Additionally, have you tried an Apple Magic Mouse or Trackpad. We understand the need for comfort when it comes to "mousing" and the Apple TrackPad really do give you a that comfortable option. We do think you will be happy with MacMini with the new M1 Chip. It looks like you have done alot of troubleshooting already and would address the compatibility of both the Apple Silicon Chip and Big Sur.

Please let us know if they are able to address the issue, or if there is something else we can help you with.
