Car Minder app compatibility with iOS 14.5

My attempts to access "Car Minder" app on my iPhone 8 has been rendered useless by the latest update. Is the any assistance available for this message I receive when trying to open the app? "Car minder needs to be updated - The developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of iOS.

I've used this app for years and today at the gas station was just as disappointed as everyone else in this thread. I have years of records stored in there which I need.

I was able to access the raw data stored in SQL tables

  1. Install iMazing software on my Windows PC. I bought this software a while ago and it's 100% worth the money for reasons other than recovering data from an app.
  2. Connect your device with iMazing
  3. Make a backup of your device
  4. Browse the backups ( https://imazing.com/guides/how-to-view-contents-of-iphone-ipads-backup )
  5. Open the list of Apps and open CarMinder
  6. Go into the Documents and find the data.sqlite database file
  7. Copy this file to your computer. Now you have all your records safely stored on your computer

The next step is to open that sqlite file on your computer. I used the free SQLiteBrowser software ( https://sqlitebrowser.org/ ) to open the file.

It helps to understand SQL and databases, however it's somewhat easy to decipher.

There are database tables and in these tables are rows of data.

table - car = list of your cars and their unique ID. You'll see that unique ID in the other tables

table - fillup = list of all your fill ups including date, gallon and price

table - record = list of service records. You need to match the data here with the "service" table

table - repair = list of repairs with description, date, and mileage

There are two other tables which you can ignore, sqlite_sequence and schema_info

It's worth noting the date fields are numbers. They are stored in the UNIX timestamp format. You can convert them (yes, one-by-one) using this online tool ( https://www.unixtimestamp.com/ )

iMazing and SQLiteBrowser worked for me too. Here is the SQL I used to get my data:

select *
from (
	select
		date(r.date, 'unixepoch', 'localtime') as Date
		, c.name as Vehicle
		, r.mileage as Mileage
		, s.name as 'Service / Repair'
	from record r
	left join service s on s.id = r.service_id
	left join car c on c.id = s.car_id

	union

	select
		date(r.date, 'unixepoch', 'localtime') as Date
		, c.name as Vehicle
		, r.mileage as mileage
		, r.name as 'Service / Repair'
	from repair r
	left join car c on c.id = r.car_id
) a
order by a.Date

Thanks for all the responses. I ended up using a backup utility to extract the data file and then used an SQL (?) reader to get the data. It was pretty time intensive. Lesson learned. I won’t use an app like this again for data tracking since my data is at the mercy of a developer updating the app. I’m making my own spreadsheet to track it for me.

I hate answers like SravanKrA gave.... they are no help at all. They might as well just say, "blue."

I used to have Moto Minder. I really liked it and put all my vehicles in it. Then Apple updated their software and it quit. I then found Car Minder. I'm pretty sure it's the same developer, but guess what? All my vehicles are in it and now it doesn't work.

This is not only frustrating, but I've lost all the scheduled maintenance for my vehicles, the mileage, and most importantly, the service history. (The program quit emailing the services to me.)

What good are these apps if Apple doesn't write backward compatibility into the new updates?

I definitely had to download the app on the old iPhone as it did not have the carminder app installed. As part of the app restore it asked me to sign in with the same Apple ID as the updated phone and then it automatically downloaded the app as part of the restore process. Not sure exactly how this worked as I know the app is no longer available when you search in the App Store. Hope that helps!

OK, I got it! I had to buy the license in order to restore the data file back to my older phone. I was able to find a promo code, so it only cost me $25. I now have the app loaded with the data, along with the exported .csv files from SQLite. Now I'll spend the time and work on organizing some sort of file. Maybe Excel? Maybe something in Notes? Note sure yet.

Also, I downloaded the app called "Carminder" (one word). It's very similar to the original. I contacted the developer (and he responded!) asking him to keep improving his app as it's missing some things like being able to add notes. Maybe if others contact him he will continue.

Thank again everyone for their help. :)

Does anyone have experience with extracting data from an app when you cannot load it anymore due to Apple breaking the app with a iOS update? I have relied on this app for years and the developer does not appear to be active any longer. I actually need some of this data to prove a warranty claim for tires (I need to prove number miles on these tires) and I can't even load the existing app data right now.
