ipad sound problems

When I use Facebook messenger to video call the sound drops out after a short period of use. The sound appears to drop out for myself and the other party. The ipad is 8th gen with ipadOS version 14.5.1.

I have tried deleting and reinstalling messenger. No sound problems in other areas.

Apple techs wanted me to send iPad to be checked in Netherlands. Since I live in Norway not going to happen. It would be some weeks before it was returned. I am now certain that the problem is NOT caused be Messenger.


The story so far….

  1. Problem started about three month ago with occasional loss of sound in video calls (Messenger and Skype).
  2. Initially only happened on a small number of occasions but it has now become much worse making Messenger and Skype virtually unusable. 
  3. The loss of sound affects all parties in the video call.
  4. Additionally now, after loss of sound, the video call shuts down. When I attempt to restart messenger it immediately shuts down again. After a number of restarts it finally connects only for the sound to again drop after a short time.
  5. I brought three identical iPads from Elkjop. The problem only occurs on the one. 
  6. Not a home network problem since the problem occurs when connected to other networks.
  7. The iPad has been reset and software reinstalled on more than a dozen occasions. The problem remains.
  8. The iPad has been reset and just Messenger installed. This does not solve the problem. 
  9. I have also reset one of then other identical iPads and restored a backup of the problem iPad on to it. Then the problem does not occur.
  10. All of the above would indicate some kind of intermittent hardware fault which appears to be getting worse.


After taking the ipad to Elkjop (the place of purchase) they are looking into the problem. I received a loan iPad. This runs Messenger and Skype perfectly without problem. So far they cannot find a problem. There obviously is a problem and I believe it is hardware related so they have been instructed to “dig deeper’. It will probably end up with my iPad taking a summer break in the Netherlands.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.


Sounds like you have already done some basic troubleshooting, If you are still having issues with the Messenger app on video calls, you may need to reach out to third party app support.


One more thing we could recommend to try, though is to disable Camera and Microphone Permissions for the app in Settings of your iPad and then re-enable them and see if that helps.

Hello, I have the same problem on two Apple Ipad's that are Gen 8. When I do Facebook live for church there is no sound other then a continous clicking. Both started only after the last Apple software 14 update. I've tried deleting the FB app and reinstalling but same problem. After trouble shooting everything and with two Apple ipads, I strongly feel the problem is in the ISO 14 update.

I have the same problem too and on the same ipad gen8 and iOS 14. I tried on an older ipad gen5 and there is no such issue. This problem happens on Facebook messenger and zoom too. I don’t think is an app problem since on the same IOS 14 I don’t have an issue on another gen ipad.

Arnie-UK, did you manage to hear anything from Facebook on this?

It happens to my ipad 8 as well ios 14.7.1

sudden sound loss during zoom meeting, discord, and many more. Everything works out really fine, still can hear sound from youtube, but no sound from zoom. Reboot wont solve the problem either. The next day, the sound works just fine, but after a while it went back to the same cycle as before.


please help to solve this problem

Ipad has been in for test and is now back home. No problem found. Unfortunately after three days problem gas returned, lol. Although I have clearly document the problem, the tech guy at the store where brought thinks that the hardware test run will not have focused on using Messenger or Skype. He has suggested I bring it back to the shop and he will run some stress tests that will focus on Messenger so that looks like the road forward.

I’m having the same issue with an 8th gen ipad. Started 2 days ago while my daughter was in a zoom meeting with her teacher (we are currently in lockdown).

Today it’s now happening with Facebook messenger video chat. Sound works fine when watching videos etc.

Its very frustrating as my daughter needs the iPad to do her classes through zoom, she’s had to start using my phone which is not ideal.

My iPad 8 , having iPad OS 14.7.1 faces the same problem too. After a short while I picked up the call in apps like messenger, discord and google meet, the sound dropped out and both parties could not hear anything. After a few several times leaving and picking up the call still doesn’t work. Does anyone have a solution to this up till now ? Or we should wait for iPad OS 15?

I have the sound problem too when using messenger where the sound goes off for several minutes on both ends . Took it to istore and they run diagnostic tests and everything appeared fine. Now they want to reinstall the entire software thinking it might be a software problem and charge me for it since i didnt buy the product from istore.. They dont seem to know what the real problem is. This is very frustrating..
