First, why do you feel a need to run Diagnostic test on M1 Mac? Have you tried

to use Recovery, to access various steps ~ and use built-in utilities from there?

"For M1 devices, hold down the power key when rebooting until you see the startup options

appear, then immediately press Command + D to enter Apple Diagnostics mode."

Please read the topic at the link that Grant Bennet-Alder posted. In that link I have posted my experienced with the exact same issue. If you already have the appointment, keep the appointment and have Apple look at it. They will likely do the same thing they did to mine and that is reflash (revive) the firmware. This is an issue with Big Sur 11.3.1 and not hardware. The firmware is updated (if it's required) at the time that the OS is updated. Something is amiss with the 11.3.1 macOS update along with it's updating of the firmware. When I took mine in and told them it happened immediately after the 11.3.1 update, they said "we've been seeing issues with it".

If anything, it will be a data point for Apple and the issue will be recorded on their end.

Please return here and post your personal experience at your Genius Bar appointment and what they said/did.

There are known issues with the Apple Diagnostic on the M1— the issue is being worked on.

You are correct no SMC or NVRAM on the M1 SoC.

The best you can do if you have an issue— equivalent Shut down, close the lid 30 secs+ , reboot as normal and if no resolve SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

I'm having this exact issue on my M1 MacBook Air. Support has told me to clear the SMC and reset NVRAM, but I've explained to them that there is no SMC on M1 Macs, and resetting NVRAM is a completely different process. This appears to be a common issue based on what I've seen on Reddit. Apple suggested I take my MacBook to the Apple store to have them look at it and possibly replace it, but I don't think it's hardware related.

Updated to include discussions.apple.com thread below where someone says it's a bug in Big Sur 11.3.1.

Seems as though this issue has been resolved as of June 16, 2021 (at least on my end and in my testing since then). Diangnostics will now run correctly and complete as it should. The issue seems to have been the diagnostics code that was actually downloaded and run when Diagnostics was initiated. Diagnostics now works just fine on Big Sur 11.4 where previous to June 16, 2021, it has never completed correctly. Sorry to say that those that have had hardware replaced to correct this software issue have probably had this done needlessly.

Regardless, the issue has now been resolved (as I said, at least on my end).

Apple Support is telling me I need to replace my MacBook and that they don't see any documentation on their end for this being a known issue. Obviously I don't want to replace my MacBook and be wasteful, or end up with another device exhibiting the same issue, but I'm still within my 14 day return window. I have an appointment this weekend at the Apple Store but I'm not holding my breath that they'll do much more than just try to swap hardware. If that's the case hopefully they'll wait for me to log into my iCloud account and then update to 11.3.1.

I actually spoke to 4 different people and they all said it was *not* a known issue, until I got it escalated. The person they escalated to found the issue after some additional digging on her end. She indicated that switching the language from UK English to US English or vice versa resolved the issue for one caller, but it didn't make any difference for me.
