That is great to know so running Big Sur. The demands of the newest OS are greater and previous OSs and for sure greater that was originally came installed on this machine. That plus, 2015 MBA is now 6 years old. Batteries are Consumable Products and they do degrade over time regardless if the number of Full Battery Cycles - 44 in your case. As for performance - as already mentioned Big Sur is demanding though doable on this machine. Just not as performance driven as newer machine. Should the battery 80% and lagging continue, perhaps as some stage having it evaluated at a Apple Authorized Service Centre might be in order - re:battery replacement

Actually, the present OS - Big Sur is better designed to do a Better job of preserving the battery than the previous OS - Catalina. So - downgrading would not really serve your purposes. As for overall performance - it the computer is performing to your liking now - Bug Sur - all the more reason not to downgrade.

Just us the computer as often as possible while plugged into the charger and only run on battery when required and no oter options available. It should work fine.
