If the Internal Drive is a Rotational Hard Drive the drive needs to be formatted as HFS Journaled with the GUID Partition Map. If the Internal Drive is and Original Apple SSD - suggest to format to same HFS / GUID. During the Installation process - High Sierra will decide if it will convert the drive to the APFS / GUID
